Hi, I'm Charles.
The person behind dndplaybook

dndplaybook is a side project. There's no company or team behind it, it's just me, Charles Bowen. I'm a software engineer in the UK, and I work on this in the evenings and weekends around my day job. I built it because it's the tool I always wanted for my own games.
Why this exists
I've been playing D&D for about ten years now, and I've DM'd loads of sessions for different friends and groups all over the country. Honestly though, I've never been a naturally imaginative person, which is a bit awkward when your hobby is a game built entirely on imagination.
I find it really hard to picture things. I could write a character's backstory and put a race and a class on the sheet, but I still couldn't see them in my head, and without something to actually look at, the game never properly came alive for me.
Then I tried AI image generation and something clicked. Suddenly I could visualise anything I wanted in my games. I wanted to build something with that, a tool for building characters, worlds and creatures. It knows who your character is, their race and class and story, and generates the artwork from that. At first it was just for me, and it helped a lot, so I figured I probably wasn't the only one who needed it.
Since then it's grown into a proper campaign prep tool. NPCs, monsters, items, whole worlds and campaigns, and sourcebook-style pages you can share for everything you make. You do your prep here, and play wherever you normally play.
How it's run
There are no investors and no ads. People buy credits to pay for the AI generations, and that's what keeps the servers running. If it covers its own bills and makes prep easier for people who love this game, I'm happy.
Most features exist because I wanted them for my own table first.
