Brindle Barleyfoot

Halfling, Monk, Chaotic Good

Description

A compact halfling monk with a round, weathered face, a crooked grin, and quick brown eyes that never stop measuring a room. He wears patched travel clothes beneath a loose monk’s sash, soft boots, and a battered ale cup hanging from his belt. His stance always seems one heartbeat from collapse: knees loose, shoulders tilted, weight drifting sideways. Yet the cup remains perfectly level through every feint, tumble, and bone-rattling strike. He smells of cedar smoke, leather, and malt, and keeps one hand curled around his ale as if it were a sacred relic.

Backstory

Brindle learned the Drunken Master’s footwork in the back room of the Copper Keg, where an old monastery cook taught him to turn every stumble into a step and every fall into a sweep. His teacher’s only rule was simple: spill neither blood needlessly nor ale wastefully. Brindle took both lessons seriously. After a gang burned the tavern to collect protection money, he carried its cracked signboard to the road and began hunting the gang’s enforcers from village to village. He now accepts payment in meals, clean bandages, and the occasional good cask, saving coins for the day he can rebuild the Copper Keg.

Personality

Brindle sways when standing still and leans on walls that are nowhere near him. He offers a toast before negotiations, after negotiations, and whenever someone looks too serious. In a fight, he laughs at missed blows, apologizes to furniture, and keeps his ale cup level through rolls, leaps, and headlong crashes. He calls everyone he meets “friend” until they prove they mean harm to someone smaller than themselves.

Flaws

Brindle cannot resist baiting a bully, even when the odds are poor and the escape route is obvious. He treats warnings about his drinking as personal insults and will defend the honor of a well-poured ale with embarrassing passion. His greatest fear is spilling a drink in front of his old teacher, so he sometimes risks a serious injury to save the cup first.

Motivations

Brindle wants to rebuild the Copper Keg as a freehouse where travelers can eat without fear of extortion. To do so, he tracks the gang that destroyed it, breaks their local grip one thug at a time, and collects the names of anyone willing to stand against them. He also hopes to master a final technique from his teacher: drinking an entire mug while fighting without losing a single drop.
