Gratix Flappledwadle
Goliath, Rogue, Chaotic Good
Description
A jolly, rugged Goliath relic hunter with bright, expressive laughing eyes, a broad crooked nose, a chiseled jaw, and a wide, knowing crooked grin. His towering, imposing physique is marked by numerous scars, yet he moves with surprising nimbleness. He wears a weathered leather duster and an adventure hat with a pinch-front fedora brim. An Indiana Jones-style whip rests in one hand, while a perfectly maintained Saladin cold steel scimitar hangs at his hip.
Backstory
Raised by a halfling family in a snug burrow crowded with cousins, preserves, and arguments over breakfast, Gratix Flappledwadle learned early that being enormous did not excuse poor manners. His adoptive parents taught him to share the last pie, mend what he broke, and leave a place better than he found it—lessons he follows even when exploring tombs. He makes his living finding relics in places sensible people leave sealed: drowned shrines, collapsed tombs, and palaces where the traps still work. He sells what can be sold, returns what belongs in a living community, and keeps anything likely to fall into an emperor’s, cult’s, or collector’s hands. His scars come from failed escapes, bad employers, and one memorable temple door that objected to being opened. He learned the Arcane Trickster’s craft from stolen spellbooks and impatient tutors, using illusion and legerdemain to get past guardians too large to fight and locks too proud to pick. Every contract is freelance, every client temporary, and every ruin contains one prize he refuses to leave behind.
Personality
He laughs at danger before deciding whether it deserves a serious response. He names his equipment, talks to trapped doors as if they were stubborn mules, and offers enemies a chance to surrender while already measuring the nearest exit. When examining a relic, his hands become gentle and precise; when bargaining, his grin widens just enough to make the other party wonder what he has noticed. He tells stories with a growing number of witnesses, none of whom are present to correct him.
Flaws
He cannot resist a sealed container, a forbidden inscription, or a challenge phrased as impossible. He often accepts jobs before checking who else wants the relic, then treats the resulting pursuit as part of the agreed price. His jokes grow louder when he is frightened, and he hides injuries until blood reaches something valuable. He has walked away from good money rather than hand a relic to someone he distrusts, even when the decision puts his companions in danger.
Motivations
He wants enough money to establish a free museum and archive where dangerous relics can be studied, protected, and kept out of tyrants’ hands. Until then, each expedition funds the next one. He is also searching for the lost relic that caused his first employer to betray the expedition and leave him for dead—a small black key whose lock, according to the surviving map, opens something beneath the oldest city in the world.
Bonds
The Flappledwadle family raised Gratix when no one else would, and he sends a share of every successful haul home to keep their burrow supplied and their table full. He carries a chipped brass thimble from his halfling mother, who taught him that small hands can still repair great damage. He is bound to the first expedition crew that treated him as more than hired muscle; their names are carved beneath the leather grip of his scimitar. He will risk almost anything to recover the black key that led to his employer’s betrayal, not for the promised treasure, but to prove that the dead members of that expedition were not abandoned for nothing.
