Hauthrond, the Last Promise

Hauthrond is a waist-high reliquary of interlocking gold ribs and pale marble veining, set with a single tear-shaped gemstone that never stops reflecting light. Its outer case is carved with tiny hands reaching toward a central sigil, and faintly raised runes ring the base like a museum plaque brought to life. When opened, the interior holds a palm-sized cradle of dark stone that warms under the touch, as if waiting.

It was commissioned for a crusade of healers in the age when kings still bargained with angels, paid for by the treasury of a doomed city named Veyrun. The priest-archon Soryth kept it locked until the plague broke the gates; then she broke the hinge herself, swearing the reliquary would not be used to save the worthy alone. After the last sickness lifted, Soryth sealed Hauthrond again and vanished, leaving only a note pinned to the gold with ash that never cooled.

When the reliquary is opened and its central sigil is traced, it gathers nearby illness, poison, and lingering curse-feelings into the dark stone, muffling them like breath held in a fist. It also grants a deep, steadied resolve to the one who offers their intent—memories of fear fade first, as if replaced by a promise they can finally keep. If carried for long, its runes begin to glow in response to the bearer’s sincerity, brightening when truth is spoken and dimming when a vow is bent.
