Syndra
High Elf, Fighter, Chaotic Good
Description
Syndra is a Moon Elf with pale skin, a septum piercing, and long black hair that falls past her waist. Her dark pink eyes are flecked with gold. She wears black chain mail threaded with dark pink accents and no helmet. In her hands rests a long black scythe.
Backstory
Syndra remembers her childhood in fragments: a woman’s hand slipping from hers, the smell of wet stone, a lullaby with no words she can recall. The orphanage in which she was left offered no answers. When the Halver family came seeking another pair of hands for their farm, Syndra went with them because they spoke gently and promised a warm bed.
For five years, she worked the fields beneath Greyhawk’s distant horizon. She learned to mend fences, milk stubborn goats, and swing a scythe until her palms blistered. The Halvers were not wealthy, but they shared every meal with her and never treated her as anything less than their daughter. For the first time, Syndra had a name that felt like it belonged to her.
The attack came after sunset.
Three figures—or perhaps four—crossed the fields without making a sound. Their skin was cold and pale in the moonlight, their faces sharpened by hunger. The Halvers had no chance. By the time Syndra reached the farmhouse, her adopted family lay dead among overturned chairs and broken crockery. One of the creatures seized her from behind. Its teeth pierced her neck.
She remembers the pain, the sudden draining cold, and then nothing.
Syndra awoke the next morning beside the bodies, sprawled in a pool of blood gone dark at the edges. Her limbs trembled. Her stomach twisted with sickness, and every breath scraped through her throat. The bite burned beneath her skin, but no monster remained to finish what it had begun.
She found a sack of hard bread, dried beans, and a skin of water in the pantry. Leaving the farm felt like abandoning her family a second time, yet staying meant dying beside them. She walked.
For several weeks, Syndra followed roads, ditches, and streams, sleeping beneath hedges and waking to the taste of blood in her mouth. She reached Greyhawk gaunt, feverish, and changed. The city swallowed her at the gates, but it was alive—and among its crowds, she hoped to find the creatures who had destroyed the only home she remembered.
Personality
Syndra measures every decision against the blood her people have already spilled. She pursues revenge with a fighter’s patience and a soldier’s eye for consequence, keeping names, faces, and dates etched into her memory. She will spare an enemy who can be turned, but she will not hesitate to sacrifice a handful of lives if doing so prevents a massacre or secures her people’s future. When challenged, she asks only one question: how many more will die if she refuses to act? Her answer rarely comforts anyone, least of all herself.
Toward those she loves, Syndra is fiercely tender. She repairs torn straps, shares the last of her food, and stands watch while others sleep, one hand resting on her black scythe. She remembers small preferences and private griefs, offering comfort without being asked. That tenderness makes her choices harder, not softer; every life she condemns feels real to her. Afterward, she cleans her weapon in silence and carries the faces of the dead beside the names of those she saved, unsure whether justice can remain justice when she must become cruel to deliver it.
