Zyralyn Greenglen
Halfling, Ranger, Neutral
Description
Zyralyn Greenglen stands barely four feet tall, a wiry halfling shaped by miles beneath branches and open sky. Long chestnut hair falls in loose strands around her ears and freckled cheeks. Brown leather armor covers dark, travel-worn clothes, while sturdy boots carry mud in their seams. A carved wooden charm rests against her chest. Her longsword hangs at one hip, a hunting bow across her back. Calm green eyes scan every treeline, rooftop, and shadow before settling on whoever speaks.
Backstory
Zyralyn Greenglen grew up in Bramblefoot, a halfling hamlet built among the alder trees along the north road. Her family kept beehives, tended a patchwork of root gardens, and guided travelers through the surrounding woods when winter buried the road markers. Her father, Orin, taught her to read tracks before she could read letters. Her mother, Pell, taught her which mushrooms belonged in a cooking pot and which ones left a person blind.
At twelve, Zyralyn began accompanying her older brother Tavin on the boundary walks. Tavin made a game of everything. He could loose an arrow through a hanging ring, climb a pine faster than any squirrel, and fill a silent stretch of forest with his laughter. Zyralyn followed behind, repairing his fletching and reminding him not to step on the bluebells that marked a spring.
The woods changed when loggers arrived from the south. Their wagons cut new paths through the hills, and their foreman ignored every warning about the old nesting grounds above Greenglen Brook. Tavin went to speak with them one morning. He did not return by dusk.
Zyralyn found his trail at the edge of a ravine: broken fern stems, one boot print, and a smear of blood on a splintered root. She followed it to the logging camp, where a fallen pine had crushed him beneath its branches. The foreman called it an accident and ordered his men to drag the body away before the rain came. Zyralyn said nothing. She remembered every face around that fire.
Her father carved a small ash-wood charm from a piece of Tavin’s bow and hung it on a cord for her. Her mother wanted her to stay home, but Zyralyn could no longer hear the forest without hearing axes behind it. She left Bramblefoot the following spring, carrying Tavin’s old longsword, three dozen arrows, and a promise to keep the roads safe for those who traveled them without harming what lived beside them.
For years she worked as a guide, scout, and occasional bounty hunter. She tracked smugglers through marshland, escorted herb gatherers past owlbear territory, and once spent six days shadowing a poacher until he led her to an entire hidden camp. She sent the man to the magistrate and left food beside the snares before burning them.
Zyralyn now travels with no fixed destination. She accepts work that protects settlements, wilderness, or people too poor to hire a guard. She does not speak of returning home. Each month, though, she sends a portion of her earnings to Bramblefoot—and listens carefully whenever someone mentions southern loggers, old forest roads, or a man with a red scarf and Tavin’s missing knife.
Personality
Zyralyn speaks softly, forcing strangers to lean closer while she studies what they reveal in the silence. She rarely takes the central seat in a room; give her a wall, a window, or a clear view of the door and her shoulders ease. Her fingers check each arrow’s fletching when she is thinking, and she rubs the carved wooden charm whenever conversation turns toward home or the dead. She has little patience for boasting, waste, or anyone who tramples living things for sport. Zyralyn offers help without ceremony—mending a snapped strap, pointing out fresh water, leaving food where a frightened animal will find it. Trust comes slowly, built through shared watches and kept promises. Once earned, hers is a quiet loyalty: she notices danger first and steps between it and her companions without announcing why.
