Vyndon Fireborn
Half-Elf, Bard, Neutral
Description
Vyndon is a handsome male half-elf with fine elven features softened by his human parentage. His skin is pale, like that of a high elf, and his raven-black hair falls to his shoulders beneath a worn leather tricorn hat. His striking green eyes are flecked with gold. He wears a sturdy leather greatcoat over practical traveling clothes rather than traditional leather armor, with a rapier at his hip and a well-made lyre carried close at hand. His posture combines a bard’s easy confidence with the guarded bearing of a man accustomed to being watched.
Backstory
Born out of wedlock to Ultio Fireborn, an elven paladin and the current ruler of Silverymoon, he was raised beneath the city’s silver towers but never within the royal household. His education came through Silverymoon’s tutors, libraries, and music halls, where he learned courtly history, elven lore, diplomacy, and the bardic arts. His father’s name opened doors, but his birth closed others; every lesson carried the unspoken question of whether he was being prepared for service, concealment, or succession. He now travels as a trained bard, carrying the Fireborn name carefully and watching for the moment when Silverymoon can no longer pretend he is merely a private family matter.
Personality
Vyndon performs confidence before he feels it, filling awkward silences with a polished quip or a quiet melody. He remembers names, titles, family connections, and private embarrassments after hearing them once. In conversation, he watches the room’s mirrors and windows as carefully as the person speaking. He is generous with praise toward servants, guards, and apprentices, but becomes formal and guarded whenever someone invokes his father. When angered, he stops joking and begins choosing words with the care of a duelist selecting a blade.
Ideals
**Recognition.** A person’s worth should be measured by what he does when no title can protect him. Vyndon intends to earn a place that cannot be dismissed as a royal favor.
Bonds
**Silverymoon.** The city’s libraries, bridges, music halls, and moonlit towers raised him when the royal court would not. He will defend Silverymoon even if its ruler never acknowledges him as a son.
Flaws
**Pride before pain.** Vyndon would rather accept a humiliating wound than let an enemy see that he has touched a private fear. He keeps score of every slight, then disguises the debt beneath courtesy until the perfect public moment arrives.
Family
Vyndon’s mother, Maeriel Thannavel, is a human historian and copyist who came to Silverymoon from Waterdeep to study elven treaties preserved in the city’s vaults. Her brief relationship with Ultio Fireborn ended before Vyndon was born, but Ultio provided discreet support and never denied paternity to Maeriel. She raised Vyndon above her bookshop near the Moonbridge, teaching him to read old elven script, spot forged seals, and judge a person by how they treated those with nothing to offer. Maeriel later married Corren Valehand, a human instrument maker whose workshop supplies lutes, harps, and viols to Silverymoon’s performers. Corren gave Vyndon a home without pretending to replace his father, and Vyndon calls him Da when speaking privately.
Vyndon has three younger half-siblings. **Lysa Valehand** is a sharp-tongued apprentice instrument maker who can identify a musician by the wear on their fingertips. She teases Vyndon about his courtly manners and sends him repaired strings by courier. **Tamar Valehand** joined the city watch after discovering that he preferred patrol reports to workshop ledgers. He is protective of Vyndon but distrusts the royal court, believing it has used the family whenever convenient. **Nim Valehand**, the youngest, is a gifted singer with a talent for turning household arguments into comic ballads. Vyndon is closest to Nim and keeps a spare copy of every song Nim writes.
The Valehands do not treat Vyndon as a visitor or a secret. He returns to the workshop between journeys, sleeps in the attic when he needs a roof, and brings gifts chosen for each sibling rather than expensive presents meant to impress them. Their affection gives him one place in Silverymoon where he is not a bastard, a political complication, or Ultio Fireborn’s son—only Maeriel’s eldest child.
