The Veiled Fortune
Changeling, Sorcerer, Chaotic Neutral
Description
A changeling Clockwork Sorcerer who poses as a cleric of Lady Luck, Tymora. Their true form stays hidden beneath a wide, oversized pilgrim’s hat draped with a chain veil, a false beak, and layers of flowing black-and-silver fabric that obscure the body’s shape. Beneath the costume, black bandages wrap the figure from throat to ankle, leaving no skin visible. Small brass gears, coin charms, and polished tokens of Tymora hang from the veil and belt, clicking softly with each step. The disguise presents a medium-sized humanoid silhouette, carefully built to suggest a solemn temple officiant while concealing the changeling beneath.
Backstory
The Veiled Fortune learned early that people trust a uniform before they trust a face. After years of borrowing identities, they chose a permanent role: a wandering cleric of Tymora whose sermons mix coin tosses, rigged-looking miracles, and cheerful warnings against taking certainty too seriously. The disguise became harder to abandon once the Clockwork Soul awakened within them. Brass mechanisms began turning beneath their skin, imposing order on every heartbeat and spell. They now claim the gears are sacred instruments granted by Lady Luck, though the truth is less comfortable: the magic is trying to make a pattern of a life built on false names. The broad hat, chain veil, false beak, layered vestments, and black bandages serve two purposes—protecting the secret of their changeling nature and giving frightened onlookers something holy to focus on while reality bends around them.
Personality
The Veiled Fortune flips a coin before answering questions that deserve no honest answer. They bless gamblers, scold people who refuse a fair risk, and refer to their spells as “small corrections to an untidy world.” When nervous, they count nearby objects in groups of four and tap a hidden brass plate beneath the bandages. Their sermons sound warm until someone asks what they looked like before becoming a servant of Tymora; then the chain veil goes still, and their voice becomes precise, flat, and unmistakably rehearsed.
Flaws
They mistake uncertainty for freedom and sabotage plans that become too reliable. The Veiled Fortune cannot resist a wager, even when the stakes are personal or the odds are plainly hostile. Their clerical performance has grown so elaborate that they sometimes defend the role instead of the people it was meant to protect. A direct question about their original face can provoke panic, sudden shapechanging, or a reckless spell meant to end the conversation.
Motivations
The Veiled Fortune wants to prove that a chosen identity can become more real than a birthright. They seek the person who first taught them that changelings deserve no name of their own, carrying a silver Tymoran coin from that encounter as both evidence and bait. The Clockwork Soul within them has begun producing flawless predictions of disasters that have not happened yet. They intend to find the source of those predictions before their magic turns every chance, friendship, and mistake into a fixed design.
