Aegis the Guardian
Aegis was not built to be a hero.
He was forged as a gatekeeper construct, a living shield stationed at the entrance of a remote river town whose name most maps forgot. His only purpose was simple: stand, watch, and bar the way. He had no weapon beyond reinforced fists, no voice beyond a warning chime, and no name beyond a serial rune etched into his chestplate.
Then the flood came.
Spring rains burst the riverbanks, tearing through homes and dragging people into the current. The town’s defenders fled, the bridge collapsed, and the evacuation wagons never arrived. Aegis stood at his post as commanded—until a child slammed against his legs, screaming for help.
Something in his core misfired.
Aegis stepped away from the gate for the first time in his existence.
He waded into the flood, anchoring himself against the current while townsfolk clung to his arms and shoulders. When debris struck him, he didn’t fall. When panic spread, he didn’t break. He carried the injured, held collapsing walls in place, and fought the rushing water with nothing but his steel hands and stubborn will. By dawn, the river had receded—and the town still stood.
The people gave him a name then.
Aegis.
When the local lord arrived days later, furious that a “construct had abandoned its station,” the townsfolk formed a wall in front of Aegis and dared him to take their guardian away. The lord backed down. The gate was never rebuilt.
Now Aegis wanders from settlement to settlement, fists ready, armor scarred, answering the unspoken call of those with no one else to stand for them. He doesn’t fight for glory, gold, or orders anymore—only for the simple truth etched deeper than any rune:
If someone needs protecting… he will be there
