Vex
Drow, Warlock, Neutral
Description
A gaunt dark elf (drow) warlock, male, late twenties in appearance, extremely thin and lean build with visible collarbones and wrist bones, slightly hunched posture from years of tunnel-dwelling. Dark grayish-purple skin with a subtle violet undertone, long unkempt white hair partially hidden under a worn dark hood. Deep garnet-red eyes, unblinking, narrowed slightly as if avoiding sunlight. Faint old scars on his forearms, none recent. Wearing a tattered dark traveling cloak and hood in muted charcoal and deep purple tones, layered leather underneath, nothing ornate or eye-catching — deliberately forgettable clothing. A small leather-bound spellbook (a Book of Shadows) hangs at his hip, tied close to his body. His expression is cold, unreadable, almost bored — but with the faintest, almost invisible hint of a smirk at the corner of his mouth, like he's suppressing a private joke. Faint eldritch violet-purple energy flickers subtly around his fingertips, like static before a spell, hinting at eldritch invocations and a pact with a cosmic entity.
Backstory
Vex—whom almost no one on the surface knows by that name—was born into a minor drow house in Menzoberranzan, insignificant enough that no one noticed when he vanished. He wasn't exiled, he wasn't banished: he simply left, one night, without any ritual or matriarch's permission. In the Underdark, that amounts to a death sentence if caught, and yet he was never pursued—as if his absence had somehow been anticipated.
He wandered the tunnels of the Underdark for years, avoiding both his own kind and whatever it was he hunted in the darkness, until a series of forgotten passages led him to the surface, straight to the foothills of the Star Mountains, in the heart of the High Forest. There, among the giant crystals that the elves say reflect the moon in impossible patterns, he spent a night he doesn't quite remember. What he does remember is waking at dawn (something he never does, due to his race's sensitivity to the sun) with the distinct feeling that something far greater than any god of Faerûn had looked at him, assessed him, and decided to let him live—in exchange for nothing he can yet explain.
Since then, something speaks to him in his sleep. Not always in words. Sometimes it's just a feeling that there's a huge, cosmic joke at play, one that only he and that entity understand—and that the rest of the world, with all its seriousness and orderly gods, is unwittingly part of the joke.
He adopted the name "Vex" upon arriving in the first surface cities, more for practicality than for drama, and discovered that dark humor and irony were a perfect way to process what happened to him without having to explain it—no one suspects that the quiet, cold-eyed drow is actually holding back laughter half the time.
Personality
Vex, in a nutshell, is this: he decided long ago that the only way to survive is to never let anyone know exactly what he's thinking. It's not active paranoia—it's such an old habit that he doesn't even notice it anymore. He speaks little not because he has nothing to say, but because every word he utters is carefully chosen, never one that slips out.
