Mildew Blightor

Tortle, Druid, Neutral

Description

A male human Circle of Spores druid, level 5, whose presence carries the damp smell of leaf mold, wet bark, and mushrooms. His clothing is patched from dark, weather-stained cloth and leather, with a hood, a gnarled staff, and small fungal growths clinging to the seams. Pale mushrooms push from his pack and shoulder wrap, while gray-green spores dust his gloves and beard. He keeps the practical tools of a field herbalist: a knife, clay jars, dried fungi, and a pouch of black compost.

Backstory

Mildew Blightor learned the work of decay beneath the roots of a drowned forest, where fallen trees became nurseries for mushrooms and beetles fed on the softened wood. His teacher, an old druid named Veyra Moss-Eye, taught him that rot is not an ending but a transfer: the dead feed the living, and the living must one day return the gift. Mildew’s path changed when loggers burned the forest floor to clear land. The smoke killed Veyra and scorched the fungal beds she had guarded for decades. Mildew survived by sheltering inside a hollow tree, breathing spore-thick air until the fire passed. He emerged with pale fungus blooming along his arms and a new purpose. Now he travels from settlement to settlement, tending wounded soil, sabotaging careless clear-cutters, and reminding the living that nothing escapes the cycle forever.

Personality

Mildew pauses beside fallen animals, rotting fences, and compost heaps to inspect what is feeding there. He speaks in short, patient sentences and refers to decay as “the second harvest.” He keeps a small jar of soil from every place where he has buried someone, labeling each one with the dead person’s name and the date. In conversation, he answers questions about death more readily than questions about himself. He shares food without hesitation, but never lets anyone waste it.

Flaws

Mildew treats destruction of natural growth as a personal offense and can lose sight of immediate danger while protecting a patch of fungi or a dying tree. He withholds information when he thinks someone is too frightened to accept the natural order, allowing small problems to become dangerous ones. He has little patience for healers who preserve a life at any cost, and his blunt certainty about death can wound grieving companions. When angry, he releases a faint cloud of spores without noticing.

Motivations

Mildew seeks the people who burned Veyra Moss-Eye’s forest and wants them to face the consequences of what they destroyed. He also searches for rare fungal colonies rumored to grow beneath graveyards, battlefields, and plague pits, believing one of them may contain the memory of his teacher. Wherever he goes, he restores damaged soil, spreads useful spores, and makes certain the dead are returned to the earth rather than sealed away and forgotten.
