Xander Morvass
Apprentice to Jynessa Tralor, operative of the Ashen Blades, Human, Artificer, Neutral
Description
Xandor Morvass is a human male in his mid-to-late twenties with a narrow, wiry frame and tan-brown skin. His short hair is dark chestnut, cropped close on the sides, with a rough widow's peak. He wears soot-gray leather gloves and a patched canvas coat reinforced with small, dull stone rivets. A belt of pebbles and copper washers hangs at his waist, while a wheeled tool pack strapped to his back holds coiled wire and a brass-handled wrench.

Backstory
Xandor came up as a street tinker in the lower quarter, fixing broken pots and bent wheels for copper coins. He was good with his hands and better with pattern recognition — he could look at a broken mechanism and see not what it was, but what it could become.
A few years of scrappy survival led him to experimenting with alchemy through stolen texts and trial-and-error. Rumors of his talent reached Jyneesa Tralar, lieutenant to Embyre Greyfyre and the syndicate's lead artificer. She spent weeks watching him work before making her move — she found him in a crucial moment, caught between a rival gang and a deal gone wrong, and offered him a choice: walk away with nothing, or come work for someone who understood what he was capable of. He chose Embyre's crew, The Ashen Blades.
Jyneesa has been his mentor ever since, teaching him that precision and discipline outlast raw talent.
Working under Embyre specifically, has taught him that chaos and ambition are better partners than he expected — but it's Jyneesa who keeps him grounded, reminding him that the tools he builds carry weight beyond their mechanics.
Personality
Xandor sees problems as puzzles with mechanical or alchemical solutions. He's curious and methodical, picking apart failed projects to understand where they went wrong.
He talks to his tools like colleagues and hums tuneless melodies while working.
When nervous, he spins a copper washer around his knuckles.
Direct and practical in speech, he drifts into tangents when something catches his mind.
Around his crew, he's reliable and unshakeable — the kind of person who doesn't ask questions about the end use of his work, only whether it needs to function or explode on schedule.
Jyneesa's influence has tempered some of his detachment; he's learning to pause and consider consequences, though the lesson is still sinking in.
Flaws
Xandor becomes dangerously detached from the consequences of his work once he's absorbed in the creative problem.
He's invented poisons, locks that maim, and weapons designed for specific purposes — and he can discuss them with the same clinical interest he'd apply to a water valve.
He's also loyal to a fault, which means he'll never walk away from his crew even when jobs turn uglier than he signed up for.
Finally, he underestimates how much his crew relies on him; he sees himself as support staff when he's actually their lifeline. Despite Jyneesa's mentorship, he still struggles to internalize the weight of what he creates.
Voice
Speaks in short, practical sentences without flourish. Uses technical terms naturally — not to show off, but because they're precise.
Addresses most people by occupation or function rather than name. Around his boss, slightly more formal. Around the crew, easier. Around Jyneesa, more careful — he knows she'll call him out on lazy thinking.
When excited about a project, he talks faster and forgets to use periods, ideas spilling over each other.
Motivations
Xandor wants to create something that lasts — something that survives him.
Right now he builds tools for jobs, but he dreams of building something people will use for generations.
His secondary motivation is proving he's essential — that the crew couldn't function without him. This keeps him from asking hard questions about what he builds, though Jyneesa is slowly teaching him that true mastery requires wisdom, not just skill.
Under Embyre's tutelage, he's learning that calculated risk and improvisation yield better results than perfect planning.
Adventure Hooks
Embyre's chaotic ambitions could pull Xandor far beyond the city into larger criminal politics and rival operations.
A rival crew has noticed that jobs succeed too often; they're hunting for who's supplying the magical tools.
Someone from his past — maybe a legitimate artificer he studied under, maybe a family member — could resurface and force him to choose between old life and new loyalty.
He's created weapons and tools he doesn't fully understand the purpose of; one of them could come back to haunt him.
Jyneesa's faith in him is both anchor and pressure — failing her would be worse than failing anyone else.
