Xalviri, The Unshackled Night
Elevated Deity, Drow, Fighter, Chaotic Neutral
Description
An elevated deity and former mortal Drow commander, Xalviri appears as a dark celestial warrior. Her obsidian skin and stark-white hair—braided into tight, practical warrior rows—recall her Drow heritage. Her pupil-less eyes glow with uniform twilight-purple light, leaving a faint trail when she turns her head quickly. She wears form-fitting light armor forged from Void-Steel, a matte midnight-blue metal that drinks in nearby light. The armor’s interlocking plates echo Tormentia’s chitinous design, but its filigree has been violently chiseled away. Shattered obsidian chains rest over her pauldrons and wrap her forearms, their broken links floating just off the armor in a cold purple gravity trail. Her tattered, floor-length battle cloak shifts between charcoal cloth and translucent twilight shadows, with brief stars blinking along its frayed hem. She carries a massive double-bladed scimitar with polished obsidian blades and violet force humming along their edges.
Backstory
Xalviri was the mortal Drow warrior commander who seized her moment when the god-hunter arrived. She turned her blades on Tormentia’s high priestesses, breaking the spider-goddess’s hold and freeing her people from its tyranny. As a reward—or perhaps a curse—the god-hunter allowed Xalviri to absorb the dying embers of Tormentia’s divine power, elevating her to godhood. She did not seek that elevation, but accepted it as the price of keeping the Underdark from collapsing after Tormentia’s fall.
Under Xalviri, the Drow became a fiercely independent, highly martial vanguard culture rather than a nation of spider-worshipping zealots. They do not worship the god-hunter as a traditional god; they regard that distant entity as a cosmic liberator. The Drow who serve the god-hunter became the Order of Calamity. They call themselves the Cleansers, rejecting the judgment that their work is evil. They saw Tormentia choke their people’s potential and believe other gods are doing the same to surface races.
The Order operates as a cosmic black-ops force. While the god-hunter remains in the shadows, its Drow scouts infiltrate cities, assassinate high priests, steal divine artifacts, and weaken churches from within. Their work clears the way for the god-hunter to strike at a weakened deity without causing mass panic. Surface kingdoms mistake the Drow’s silence for isolationism. In truth, The Order's agents move through their streets in disguise, mapping temples—including those dedicated to the player characters’ gods—and marking which faiths are ready to be cleansed.
Personality
Xalviri speaks in a quiet, gravelly whisper that carries across a battlefield without rising in volume. She stands without parade-ground posture, keeps her sentences blunt, and has no patience for divine grandstanding. She treats followers as a veteran squad rather than a congregation, correcting their footwork, questioning their plans, and trusting them with hard truths. When she meets a mortal, her gaze immediately sorts physical scars, emotional wounds, tactical strengths, and exploitable weaknesses. She is pragmatic rather than paranoid: she prepares for betrayal without expecting it from everyone. In private, she watches before she speaks, often through a forest predator’s eyes or a patch of shadow at the edge of a room.
Adventure Hooks
• Temples and high priests targeted by Xalviri’s operatives are left with one shattered obsidian chain link on the desecrated altar. The party must determine whether the attacks are liberation, revenge, or the opening move in a wider divine conflict.
• The Vanguard has vanished beneath a contested Underdark fortress, leaving a path uncleared for the god-hunter. Xalviri needs the party to recover the operatives before an old enemy seals the route.
• The Eclipse Twins—the Mage Slayer and the Spell Thief—have stopped sending intelligence from the surface. Xalviri offers the party a single command: find them, learn what compromised them, and decide whether they can still be trusted.
• A faction of Drow claims Xalviri has not destroyed Tormentia’s influence but inherited it. Their proof is a chain cult gathering around relics from the spider-goddess’s shrines.
• Xalviri asks the party to protect a surface settlement without revealing her involvement. Her only aid is indirect: a silent predator watching from the treeline, a shifted shadow, and a broken obsidian link left where an ambush was prevented.
