Orinn

Cosmic Mathematician, Half-Elf, Artificer, Neutral

Description

Orinn is a twenty-year-old half-elf with ink-stained fingers and a perpetually distracted, hyper-focused gaze. He has spent the last fifteen years living as a mortal, though the shape of a forgotten god remains in the way he studies every surface, object, and person as part of a larger equation.

Backstory

Orinn is the current mortal incarnation of a god whose forgotten domains are structure, formulas, innovation, and arcana. When the divine cycle turned, he reformed as a half-elf with no memory of his godhood. The transformation sealed away his divine power along with those memories, but it did not erase the habits, instincts, or magical prowess built into his nature. He still sees the world as a system of relationships, detects flaws before he can name them, and reaches solutions through methods he cannot remember learning.

For the last fifteen years, Orinn has lived as a mortal. He chose a quiet town on an isolated crossroads and opened a workshop called the Unwinding Cog at its edge. The location was deliberate. The world beyond the town is too loud and chaotic: too many people, accidents, competing intentions, and magical disturbances. Here, the variables are few. Orinn can map the local ley lines with less interference and study the behavior of the surrounding region without the noise of larger settlements.

The shop is part repair store, part laboratory, and part refuge. Its shelves hold clockwork tools, annotated spell components, repaired farm implements, experimental devices, and notebooks filled with equations in several scripts. Orinn believes he is simply pursuing a lifelong fascination with systems. He does not know that many of his diagrams are fragments of divine formulae, or that the oldest mechanisms in the shop respond to him as their maker.

His mortal life is not a punishment, but a lesson built into the cycle. The memories he has lost will return only when he understands what he was meant to learn this time. At that moment, his true divine form will reassert itself, carrying his mortal experiences forward rather than discarding them. The danger is that awakening may not occur gently: every repaired object, mapped ley line, and solved problem may be assembling the pattern that unlocks him.

Personality

Orinn experiences the world through numbers. He counts steps, breaths, syllables, and the weight distribution of a room without meaning to. When visitors enter, he may calculate their combined weight and point out which floorboards are flexing before offering a greeting.

His candor is blunt but patient. He speaks in short, precise statements and gently interrupts vague emotional or poetic explanations with requests for variables, causes, and measurable effects. He is not trying to belittle anyone; he simply treats clarity as kindness.

He cannot leave a broken or poorly aligned object alone. A dented shield, frayed rope, or crooked scabbard draws his twitching hands. He adjusts or repairs it while speaking, muttering about angles of incidence, wasted motion, and preventable failure.

Adventure Hooks

- A shipment of mundane scrap arrives at the Unwinding Cog containing a broken device that Orinn recognizes without knowing why. Repairing it causes one local ley line to shift and reveals a symbol from his divine identity. - The town's predictable patterns begin failing: livestock vanish from locked pens, travelers arrive twice, and the same stranger appears at different points along the crossroads. Orinn asks the party to help identify the new variable before the disturbance reaches his workshop. - A rival arcanist discovers that Orinn's notebooks contain formulae no mortal scholar can derive. They want the notes, the shop, or Orinn himself, and are willing to manufacture magical crises to force him to reveal what he knows. - The party finds a sealed chamber beneath the Unwinding Cog. Its door opens only when Orinn completes an equation written in a script he cannot read. Inside waits a divine tool built to restore his memories—or overwrite his mortal lessons. - One of Orinn's inventions begins answering questions in his voice, including questions he has never heard. It claims that the current incarnation is approaching its final equation and that someone in the town is trying to prevent the awakening.
