Hazel Lycast

Hazel Lycast, the Aethel’vanna—the First Spark—is an exile of the Primordial Grove and a living myth. Though more than seven centuries old, she has the vitality of an apex warrior in her prime, preserved by Artemia’s ancient blessing upon the first generation. Her skin resembles flawless white birch bark, smooth and youthful. Her thick, crown-like mane is made of weightless white ash-smoke that drifts upward without dispersing. Unblinking eyes burn with molten gold fey-fire. She carries herself with calm, absolute physical power. Hazel follows the Controlled Burn philosophy of wildfire druidism: destruction exists to preserve life, restore balance, and make rapid regrowth possible.

Centuries ago, Hazel Lycast stood beside the goddess Artemia when the Mith’thil’vanna was founded. The first generation were not merely hunters or druids; they were warriors and protectors of deep fey sanctuaries. Hazel still embodies their original charge: defend the vulnerable, preserve sacred places, and never confuse slaughter with protection.

Hazel became one of the first great keepers of the Controlled Burn philosophy. Her wildfire destroyed corruption so life could return, while her martial training let her stand between the sanctuaries and those who would violate them. She taught both disciplines to her eldest son, Rowan Lycast, who later passed part of her wildfire teachings to his daughter, Lavender.

As newer generations grew radical and bloodthirsty, Hazel opposed the cultish council openly. She warned that the Mith’thil’vanna was becoming the very monster it had sworn to hunt. Long before Lavender was born, the council framed Hazel as a heretic to Artemia and exiled her into the deepest unmapped sectors of the fey-woods.

Hazel and Lavender have never met. The council tells younger members—including Rose and Thorn—that Hazel died a traitor. The truth is less convenient: she survived, and her power has only deepened. They fear that the First Spark might return and expose what the tribe has become. Rowan remains the living bridge between Hazel’s teachings and Lavender’s inheritance, while Caelen, Hazel’s younger son, supports the cult’s newer direction.

Hazel speaks softly enough that others must stop talking to hear her. She teaches through demanding trials rather than comforting lessons: carry the wounded before claiming a weapon, hold a defensive line before pursuing an enemy, and learn exactly what a fire will consume before calling it useful. She treats flame as a living measure of consequence, watching its color and movement before deciding whether to feed it or smother it.

Hazel protects with the discipline of a veteran warrior. She accepts decisive violence when it prevents greater harm, but regards uncontrolled rage as another form of weakness. She does not threaten; she states what will happen and gives people one chance to prove her wrong. When angered, she becomes quieter, and the ash-smoke of her hair rises faster.

When she finally meets Lavender, Hazel recognizes her wildfire magic at once but does not embrace her immediately. She asks, “When the fire reaches the frightened, what do you save?” Lavender’s answer tells Hazel whether Rowan passed on a technique or a creed.

- The party finds Hazel alive in an unmapped fey-wood and must decide whether to escort her back to confront the council that condemned her. - The council has begun a cleansing fire that will consume a sanctuary rather than restore it. Hazel asks the party to stop the rite without killing the young warriors carrying it out. - Rowan seeks Hazel in secret, hoping to reconcile his inherited teachings with the life he built away from his mother. Caelen works to prevent their reunion, fearing Hazel’s return will fracture the tribe. - Hazel and Lavender are brought together at a sanctuary under attack. Hazel recognizes the wildfire magic immediately and tests Lavender with a single question: “When the fire reaches the frightened, what do you save?” - Rose and Thorn learn that Hazel survived and are ordered to bring back proof of her death. Their orders change when Hazel shows them evidence of the council’s original betrayal. - The party must recover an Artemian relic from the tribe’s founding era before the council uses it to sanctify its next campaign of conquest.
