Caelen Lycast
Mith'thil'vanna Council Elder, Eladrin, Druid, Lawful Evil
Description
Caelen is a lean, razor-thin male Eladrin with severe, angular features and the Lycast family's molten-gold eyes. His gaze is perpetually narrowed, cold, and calculating. Bleached platinum-white hair is pulled into a tight topknot bound with black-metal bands.
He wears magnificent iridescent scale mail forged by rock gnomes, its heat-treated plates shifting between metallic dark purple and charcoal black. A high-collared ceremonial mantle of stiff black wood rests over his shoulders, carved in the pattern of interlocking thorns. Caelen stands with aristocratic, military rigidity and expects every person nearby to submit. He looks less like a creature of the forest than a tyrant who has trapped the forest inside a cage of steel and ash.
Lavender can recognize the family resemblance in his eyes. Her father's gold eyes resembled warm sunrise; Caelen's look like gold coins—cold, greedy, and transactional.
Backstory
Hazel Lycast trained Caelen in the years before her exile, teaching him the discipline and danger of wildfire magic. He became skilled, but never matched Rowan's natural talent. The comparison followed him through childhood, feeding the resentment he hid beneath perfect obedience.
When Hazel was banished for heresy, Caelen became terrified that anyone might associate him with her beliefs. He embraced the cult's doctrine with fervor, turning the wildfire Hazel taught him into a weapon for cruel purges. He monitored Rowan constantly, convinced that his older brother's loyalty was false and jealous of the talent Caelen could never equal.
After Rowan's mysterious death, Caelen condemned his brother's weakness and seized the political vacuum. The ruling council rewarded his absolute fanaticism with a permanent seat, making him a formal Tier 2 regional boss of the Mith'thil'vanna. He now uses authority, wildfire, and manufactured accusations to keep his region obedient.
Personality
Caelen speaks with clipped precision and the rigid courtesy of a military officer addressing subordinates. He treats disagreement as evidence and hesitation as confession. Every order is framed as doctrine, every punishment as necessary cleansing.
He is a vicious tyrant, not a reckless killer. Caelen preserves his own position first, placing allies between himself and danger and spending their lives without pause. He uses praise as a leash, public shame as a weapon, and loyalty tests to force people into choices that incriminate them either way. When compared to Rowan, he becomes colder and more formal, as if composure could erase the old wound.
Adventure Hooks
• Caelen orders the party to investigate a village accused of sheltering heretics, intending the mission to end in a public purge rather than an inquiry. • Evidence surfaces that Rowan's death was arranged by someone within the Mith'thil'vanna. Caelen will kill to suppress it, yet secretly needs to learn whether Rowan left proof of his innocence. • Caelen discovers that Lavender has inherited a fragment of Hazel's wildfire magic and declares his niece a living test of family loyalty. • A survivor of one of Caelen's purges carries proof that his wildfire can be redirected—but only if the party can force him to choose between saving innocents and obeying the council.
Combat Tactics
Caelen fights as a controller and executioner rather than a front-line bruiser. He divides the battlefield with wildfire, forcing enemies toward prepared kill zones while leaving safe-looking paths that expose them to ambushes. He focuses on pain, isolation, and movement denial before committing to a finishing attack.
He deliberately positions cultists, guards, and coerced civilians between himself and the party, using them as meat shields without hesitation. When an ally is wounded, Caelen may ignite the ground around them to punish rescuers or abandon them to preserve his own escape route. He targets healers, leaders, and anyone who challenges his authority, then announces each victim's suffering as proof of the council's judgment.
If reduced to a dangerous threshold, Caelen sacrifices his protective screen, triggers every active patch of wildfire at once, and retreats through the confusion. He prefers surviving with his authority intact over dying for a glorious last stand.
