Morrec Vareth
Lieutenant in charge of recruitment and combat training for the Ashen Blades; leads selected mid-level operations as needed., Tiefling, Rogue, Chaotic Neutral
Description
Embyre Greyfyre’s recruitment lieutenant at the Ashen Blades’ Public Hub—an experienced fighter with a fast, practical mind who teaches new blades how to survive their first week. Morrec keeps company like a hard lesson: shoulders squared, voice short, and eyes tracking for openings even while he smiles. He dislikes Embyre’s flamboyant leadership style and treats her authority as something negotiated, not inherited. The money is real, the loyalty is real—yet his respect is conditional, and Embyre knows it.
Backstory
Morrec joined the Ashen Blades early, when survival meant learning fast and choosing which people you could afford to protect. He proved his worth in the field, then settled into recruitment and mid-level operations because it paid and because he liked the sense of control.
His relationship with Embyre has always been complicated: he has stayed loyal, but he has never stopped resenting her methods. If the syndicate falls apart, he intends to be the one who catches it—by force if necessary.
During a tense night at the Ashen Blades’ Public Hub, a disgruntled operative—one of the Syndicate’s own—stepped out of the crowd and demanded trial by duel for leadership, spitting blame for recruiting “softness” and claiming Embyre’s authority was hollow. Morrec backed away half a pace, letting the blade with the loudest mouth prove whether it had the steel to match. Embyre accepted without changing expression, asked for one clear rule of engagement, and then ended it fast: a tight feint into a closing line, a hard, clean burst of damage before the challenger could find footing, and a finish that left them on their back with their confidence scattered across the floor. Morrec—who expected politics to be won with noise and threats—was the one truly surprised; he’d seen Embyre talk recruits into motion, but he hadn’t seen her shut down an entire challenge in a single exchange. Afterward, when he corrected new blades, he stopped cutting her down in public and started watching her angles the way he watched his own—no longer treating her leadership as something to negotiate, but as a capability she could prove with steel when she chose.
Personality
Morrec doesn’t raise his voice; he sharpens it. He runs training like drills with consequences, praises only what gets results, and uses humor as a blade edge—quick, dry, and pointed. When he’s angry, he gets even more efficient, as if anger is another tool he can afford to waste.
Flaws
Morrec is motivated by coin and leverage more than the syndicate’s founding ideals.
He lacks reverence for Embyre’s leadership and will argue her decisions in public if he believes it weakens her.
He also tends to test loyalty by pushing it to the edge, then pretending surprise when it breaks.
Voice
Gravel-rough and economical. He calls people ‘blade’ and ‘kid’ with the same tone, like both mean the same thing: behave or bleed.
Motivations
Keep his position by being the most useful instructor and fighter in the syndicate, and secure a payday that makes betrayal an unnecessary temptation. He wants Embyre’s authority to prove itself, not simply exist.
Adventure Hooks
1) Embyre needs a recruit delivered quietly, but Morrec insists on ‘training pressure’ in front of the wrong crowd. 2) A recruit claims Morrec promised them protection; Morrec denies it—Embyre knows he did, but not what he meant. 3) Morrec receives a bribe from a rival and demands Embyre match it before he’ll keep coaching.
