Briar Eldrath

Briar Eldrath is a male shifter with a rangy, weather-hardened build shaped by long hours in the saddle and cold flights above Waterdeep. His dark hair is kept short beneath a blue-and-silver griffon rider’s helm, and pale scars mark one cheek and both hands. He wears reinforced City Watch leathers beneath a black riding coat, its old badge polished but crossed by the griffon corps insignia. A revolver rests beside his saddle, while a hooked signal whistle hangs at his throat. When he's angry his instincts surface, his pupils narrow, his canines lengthen, and coarse gray fur gathers along his jaw and forearms.

Briar joined the City Watch young, assigned to the Dock Ward where he learned to read forged cargo seals, drunken brawls, and the quiet signs of a smuggling crew at work. During a warehouse fire, he found a wounded griffon trapped beneath a collapsed beam. He freed it instead of pursuing the arsonists, and the choice changed his life. The griffon survived; the arsonists escaped; Briar never forgot either fact.

Years later, after refusing an order to bury evidence tied to a well-connected merchant, Briar left the Watch rather than sign a false report. The griffon corps accepted him after he exposed the merchant’s smuggling route from the air. He now patrols Waterdeep’s walls, roads, and harbor approaches from the back of his scarred companion, enforcing the law without caring who resents it.

Briar checks doors, rooftops, and escape routes before sitting down. He speaks in clipped reports, calling people “citizen” or “officer” until they earn his first name. He keeps a written log of every patrol and copies useful details into the margins: boot prints, bird calls, unusual knots, and which taverns water their ale. He shows affection by repairing tack, sharpening blades, and taking the most dangerous watch.

Briar treats procedure as a shield against personal judgment, even when the written rule serves the wrong person. He distrusts nobles, guildmasters, and anyone who asks him to keep a matter “off the record.” Once he marks someone as a threat, he watches them so closely that he misses quieter dangers nearby. He would rather face punishment for disobedience than admit that a compromised order confused him.

Briar wants to prove that the law can protect ordinary people without becoming a weapon for the powerful. He hunts the merchant whose smuggling operation cost him his badge and suspects the scheme reaches into the Watch. He also seeks a permanent place among the griffon riders for the wounded griffon that first earned his loyalty, though he has never admitted that the creature’s fate matters more to him than his own promotion.
