Vespera Moonglare

Hexblood, Sorcerer, Chaotic Neutral

Description

Vespera Moonglare is a lean hexblood woman with ash-pale skin, pointed ears, and waist-length black hair threaded with silver. A small horn curves from her left temple, while a dark hag’s mark stains the skin beneath her right eye. She wears a high-collared violet coat over a soot-gray dress, both stitched with copper thread and singed at the cuffs. Glass charms, teeth, and dried herbs hang from her belt beside a crooked wand of blackthorn. She stands with one shoulder raised and her fingers twitching as though shaping an unseen spell. Her smile arrives a moment too late, leaving the first impression of someone amused by dangers no one else can see.

Backstory

Vespera Moonglare was found as an infant beneath a crooked rowan tree, wrapped in a black shawl and marked with a crescent-shaped birthmark behind her left ear. The village midwife raised her alongside three human children, but Vespera never quite belonged. Birds went silent when she entered the orchard. Candles guttered when she laughed. By the time she was old enough to speak, she had begun dreaming in a woman’s voice—a lullaby sung from the other side of a locked door.

Her power first surfaced during a winter argument. Cornered by older children near the frozen millpond, Vespera screamed, and every sheet of ice around her burst into silver shards. No one was killed, but the village saw the accident as proof that something had claimed her. After that night, she learned to hide her pointed teeth, knot her hair around the small horns at her temples, and keep her temper behind clenched teeth. An old peddler taught her card tricks, false names, and three useful rules: never accept a gift without asking its price, never sleep beneath an unfamiliar roof, and never answer a voice calling from the dark.

At seventeen, Vespera followed that voice into the forest. It led her to a ruined shrine where she found a woman wearing Vespera’s face, older by decades and crowned with antlers of polished bone. The woman called herself Vespera’s “first mother” and claimed the girl’s blood had been bargained away before her birth. When Vespera refused to kneel, the shrine caught fire. She escaped with a scorched silver locket, but the woman vanished into the smoke, promising to collect what was owed.

Vespera now travels from town to town, selling minor magical services, chasing rumors of the antler-crowned woman, and taking work that pays in secrets as often as coin. She wants freedom more than safety and has little patience for laws written by people who never asked her permission to exist. Somewhere, the locket still opens for someone else’s key—and Vespera intends to find out whether the woman in the shrine was her creator, her enemy, or the only person who knows what she truly is.

Personality

Vespera treats every conversation like a game with rules only she can see. She asks direct, unsettling questions, answers polite ones with jokes, and watches people’s hands when they speak. She dislikes being ordered about, but respects anyone who states their price plainly. Promises interest her more than laws; a bargain freely made matters to her, while a command backed by rank earns immediate defiance.

She follows curiosity wherever it leads, especially toward strange magic, forbidden doors, and people who claim nothing frightens them. Vespera helps when the choice feels interesting, personal, or unfair—not because anyone deserves saving. She has little patience for cruelty disguised as duty, though she may respond to it with a prank, a stolen secret, or a spell cast at precisely the wrong moment.

When angry, she becomes quiet and excessively courteous, smiling as she decides how much trouble someone is worth. When frightened, she talks faster and starts naming possible escapes aloud. She collects unusual names, scraps of overheard gossip, and small objects with personal meaning, keeping them in separate pockets and refusing to explain the system. She laughs at her own jokes, especially when nobody else does.
