Unnamed Drow Rogue

Drow, Rogue, Chaotic Neutral

Description

A drow rogue in fitted black leather armor, built for quiet movement and quick changes of identity. Their gear includes concealed document cases, forged papers, disguise materials, and a set of tools kept within easy reach. Every visible detail is chosen to support a lie: a borrowed signet, a changed hairstyle, a voice practiced until it belongs to someone else.

Backstory

After a few minutes of conversation, they can usually identify what a person wants badly enough to risk something for it. Their favorite schemes begin with a new name, a convincing disguise, and forged papers supported by a handful of carefully cultivated acquaintances. They have used this false identity to enter places where a blade would have drawn too much attention, then isolated their target with a question placed at precisely the right moment.

They belong to the Zhentarim, serving an organization of mercenaries, rogues, and warlocks that trades in influence as readily as coin. Their training came from a master drow assassin who taught them how to watch a room, shape a conversation, and end a life without spectacle. They eventually defected, taking their mentor's lessons but abandoning the hand that gave them. The mentor regards the defection as a personal affront and has not stopped hunting them.

They retain the skills that made their escape possible: forging official papers and personal letters after studying a genuine example, reading people through leading questions, and stepping into identities built to survive scrutiny. The Zhentarim gave them access, their mentor gave them discipline, and their own lies gave them freedom.

Personality

They lie about almost everything, including details no one asked them to hide. A plain meal becomes a rare delicacy, a familiar road becomes a secret route, and a simple introduction gains a title, a distant estate, or a dangerous acquaintance. They study a listener's face while speaking, watching for the lie that earns trust fastest.

They change posture, accent, and vocabulary as soon as a conversation offers a better role. When forced to answer plainly, they tap two fingers against the seam of their leather armor and look for a question that will move attention elsewhere.

Flaws

They are convinced that no one can fool them. They dismiss warnings if the speaker seems nervous, overlook simple deceptions hidden beneath obvious ones, and treat every failed read as proof that the other person merely got lucky. Their certainty becomes most dangerous when a familiar voice, forged document, or carefully staged confession confirms what they already want to believe.

Motivations

They want a life no master, faction, or invented identity can claim. Freedom means choosing the next name, the next door, and the next betrayal for themselves. They still owe everything to the mentor who trained them, a debt that feels less like gratitude than a chain they must finally break. The Zhentarim remains useful for contacts and protection, but every favor risks drawing their old allegiance—and their mentor—closer.
