Fynzale Hrothwen
Troupe Leader, Hobgoblin, Neutral
Description
Fynzale Hrothwen has a crooked silhouette, a moss-green face, and a smile crowded with lacquered black teeth. She dresses in patched crimson velvet, swan feathers, and strips of painted festival banners. Her troupe travels by lantern-lit barge, carrying instruments sealed against damp and costumes that smell of peat smoke and rosewater. When she takes the stage, frogs fall silent around the tent.
Backstory
Fynzale once performed alone in roadside beer halls, earning coins by imitating the voices of drowned travelers. A failed act at the Mirelight Tournament left her booed from the stage, and she found her troupe the next morning: a runaway drummer, two disgraced acrobats, and a puppeteer whose strings moved without hands. She taught them discipline, turned their misfortune into spectacle, and won the tournament the following year. They have won every year since. The secret behind their success is a black-marsh contract: each performer surrendered one cherished memory to Fynzale, and the troupe’s acts are powered by those memories.
Personality
Fynzale speaks to everyone as if they are already part of her audience, punctuating praise with a tap of her cane and correcting poor posture with a single raised finger. She remembers every applause, insult, and unpaid favor from every tournament she has entered. Before a performance, she presses a sugar-plum into each performer’s hand; those who refuse receive a longer rehearsal. She never admits to nerves, but counts the tent’s guy ropes whenever thunder rolls.
Adventure Hooks
- This year’s tournament judges vanish before the final round, leaving behind tickets printed with Fynzale’s private seal. - A former troupe member wants their stolen memory returned, even if doing so destroys the act that has made the troupe unbeatable. - Fynzale offers the characters a place in the troupe after seeing one of them perform an act of genuine courage; the contract’s price is written in invisible ink. - Someone has begun sabotaging the troupe’s props with symbols from the black marsh, suggesting Fynzale’s contract has come due.
