Naba Smokerose
Harengon, Bard, Chaotic Neutral
Description
Naba Smokerose is a quiet Harengon performer from the Whisperbloom Troupe, with long ears that turn toward every sound and the controlled presence of someone accustomed to watching a room before entering it. She is a powerful player of heroic stories, especially songs of legendary deeds and fallen champions. Her voice gathers force when she takes on a strong actor’s role, shifting from restrained narration to a commanding performance. She uses dance as much as music to convey each tale, turning sword strokes, desperate retreats, and final victories into precise movement.
Backstory
Naba Smokerose was raised by To-ludrial, a Spring Eladrin whose shameless flirtation and theatrical instincts made him a memorable presence among the Whisperbloom Troupe. His charm never passed to Naba. She inherited his lessons, his stagecraft, and his battered first songbook, but not his appetite for attention. She learned to turn a song into a rallying cry and a stage entrance into a battlefield maneuver, growing into a valor bard among the Feywild’s wandering performers.
During the Tournament of Titania, Naba’s wild magic first erupted. The surge trapped To-ludrial inside its spell, leaving her mentor caught in the very magic that had awakened within her. Naba left the Whisperbloom Troupe immediately after the incident, abandoning the only family and stage she had known. She carries the guilt with her, questioning every reflection and studying every mirror as if its surface might reveal whether To-ludrial is still trapped—or whether Naba caused something worse.
Before meeting the party, Naba survived by moving from one Feywild settlement to another, taking short performances wherever no one knew her name. She avoided mirrors, polished shields, still ponds, and anyone who asked about the Whisperbloom Troupe. Her performances became smaller and harsher. She still played the valorous songs To-ludrial taught her, but altered the endings so her mentor never appeared onstage. When her wild magic flared, she abandoned the venue before anyone could ask questions.
Eventually, Naba learned of a traveling hedge-mage who claimed to know a ritual capable of opening magical prisons. The ritual required a relic from outside the troupe’s usual circuit. Naba followed the lead alone, carrying To-ludrial’s battered first songbook and refusing to tell anyone why she needed the relic.
