Kaelthas Vryndar
Cleric-priest warden and hospice rites officiant in the Shadowfell borderlands., Shadar-kai, Cleric, Lawful Neutral
Description
A balanced holy-priest warden from the Shadowfell: his rites heal with warding certainty, and his devotion is a duty defended with procedure rather than rage.
Backstory
Kaelthas tended a hospice outpost carved into a Shadowfell waystation, treating refugees with rites that tasted like iron and clean snowfall. When the warding circle failed, the dead didn’t stay released—something learned their names, and it reached for the living next. Kaelthas survived by praying through the panic and sealing the exits for those who could still walk. Afterward, he made a personal vow in the cold: no one leaves his care without first being bound to mercy—cleanly, correctly, and with the full measure of his attention. He keeps the vow the way other clerics keep scripture: word by word, step by step, even when no one is watching.
Personality
Tender-but-firm in small, careful ways. He warms his hands before he touches a wound, then works with unhurried precision. He speaks softly, never vague—naming what he’s doing and why—while keeping his posture straight as a vow. When fear rises, he steadies everyone with routine: wash the cloths, set the lanterns, say the first line of the prayer together.
Flaws
He trusts procedure more than people, and when the plan breaks he becomes rigid instead of improvising. He has a hard time accepting help, even when it’s offered.
Voice
Low, measured cadence; he never raises his volume in a crisis. He pauses before every healing touch—not to dramatize, but to confirm the ward is locked in place.
Motivations
To build small sanctuaries where the vulnerable are harder to reach—ensuring those who need help aren’t the easiest door to open.
Adventure Hooks
1) A village wants his blessing, but their leader insists on shortcuts—Kaelthas senses a warding lie. 2) A healer missing from a nearby waystation returns with pale eyes and wrong hymns. 3) A reliquary he once sealed has reappeared, humming with a name he can’t forget.
