Character

Amaryl

Drow, Rogue, Neutral Good

Description

Amaryl is a young adult drow woman standing approximately 5'4" tall with a lean, wiry, athletic build shaped by years of climbing, running, stealth, and survival in the Underdark. She has deep charcoal-gray skin with cool undertones, marked by several faint, healed scars across her face, shoulders, arms, and hands. Her face is narrow and angular, with high cheekbones, a delicate jawline, and a slightly pointed chin, while her pale silver-blue eyes are large and almond-shaped, giving her an intensely watchful expression. Her long silver-white hair falls well past her shoulders, naturally tousled and often tangled, with portions gathered into a loose, practical braid. Her long, sharply pointed drow ears have only a few simple piercings. Her hands are slender but calloused from years of hardship and handling blades and tools. She carries herself with a guarded, alert posture, rarely standing completely at ease, giving her an overall appearance that is striking and naturally elegant but weathered by captivity, escape, and life as a survivor.

Backstory

Origins in the Underdark

Born into a minor drow House beneath the subterranean gloom of the Underdark, Amaryl was raised in the suffocating shadow of Lolth's brutal dogma. Her family held neither great wealth nor high standing, and her life was mapped out from the start: know her place, yield to authority, and serve the ruthless order that governed drow society for generations.

She was conditioned to believe that strength was the only currency, weakness invites exploitation, and mercy was a fatal flaw. Moving like a shadow, she learned to read threats before they materialized and strike swiftly when pressed, knowing that a single moment of hesitation could prove fatal. Yet, beneath the hardened exterior forged by survival, Amaryl could never entirely smother her instinct for compassion.

Her defiance was not born of a grand rebellion against the Spider Queen, but from a simple spark of sympathy: when a starving slave suffered before her, Amaryl offered food, seeing a living being rather than mere property. To her House, this modest act of mercy was an unpardonable treason. Stripped of her family name, she was cast into darkness, imprisoned, and subjected to relentless torment aimed at shattering her spirit and forcing a confession of error. They sought not her execution, but her total submission—an admission that compassion was weakness.

She refused to bend.

The Escape

Salvation arrived unheralded when chaos tore through the prison halls. A band of unknown raiders struck the guards and unbarred the cell doors, throwing the dungeon into frantic combat. Amidst the bedlam, Amaryl fled into the dark, her path crossing with a severely wounded scout from among the attackers. Though carrying on alone offered the scout a better chance at survival, they halted and refused to leave her to her fate.

Together, they plunged into the labyrinthine tunnels of the Underdark with ruthless pursuers hot on their trail. For arduous days, they navigated the gloom in constant flight. Clad in little more than a ragged underdress and armed only with a dagger, Amaryl relied entirely on endurance, stealth, and instinct to survive the relentless hunt.

The Scout's Legacy

As they fled, the dying scout bestowed upon Amaryl her very first lesson in the arcane arts, teaching her to weave a fleeting orb of starlight—a spell known as Starry Wisp. It was a hasty gift forged in desperation, yet it marked the first time anyone had shared knowledge with her out of genuine goodwill.

When the scout's mortal wounds finally claimed their life, Amaryl stayed by their side until the end. With their last breath, the scout pressed a mysterious medallion into her hands, whispering a final cryptic injunction:

“Follow her light.”

They died before explaining the symbol's meaning, the identity of their mysterious patron, or the reason behind the daring rescue mission.

Honoring her savior's memory, Amaryl took the scout's dagger to serve as a second blade at her side. She kept the medallion as well—not as plunder, but because it had been deliberately entrusted to her by the person who gave their life to save hers.

She still does not know what it means.

Current Path

Emerging onto the surface world only days ago, Amaryl finds herself overwhelmed by the staggering vastness of the open sky and the piercing brilliance of the sun. In a land where no House claims her and strangers view her with wary curiosity rather than immediate hostility, she must learn how to truly live rather than merely survive.

Through careful trading, scavenging, and resourcefulness, she has gathered practical adventuring gear—leather armor, a shortsword, a shortbow with a quiver of arrows, thieves' tools, and a burglar's pack. None of it carries much sentimental value. It is simply what she has managed to acquire during the few days since reaching the surface.

The scout's dagger is different.

That blade is a reminder of the person who saved her.

While wandering through a local settlement, she happened upon a mud-stained letter offering payment to escort a supply wagon to the town of Phandalin. Seeking a fresh start, reliable coin, and some kind of purpose on the surface, she accepted the contract for Gundren Rockseeker.

She knows almost nothing about Gundren.

She knows almost nothing about Phandalin.

And she has no idea what waits for her on the road.

Now, armed with twin blades, a bow, a humble cantrip, and the mysterious medallion resting against her chest, Amaryl steps forward onto the road to Phandalin.

Her goals remain simple:

Survive the unknown world.

Find a place where she truly belongs.

And, someday, find the people who gave her freedom and return the amulet entrusted to her.

Personality

Amaryl is quiet, cautious, and intensely observant, having learned from childhood that danger can come from anyone and rarely announces itself. She tends to keep people at arm's length, studying their words and actions before deciding whether they can be trusted, and genuine kindness often makes her suspicious because she was taught that every favor comes with a price. Despite this, she possesses a deep instinct for compassion that she never managed to suppress; she cannot easily ignore someone who is suffering, especially when she believes she can help. She is resourceful and practical, preferring careful planning and survival instincts over unnecessary risks, but she is also deeply curious about the surface world and quietly fascinated by things she was never allowed to experience in the Underdark. Amaryl rarely expresses her emotions openly, instead showing affection and gratitude through actions rather than words. She values freedom above almost everything, distrusts authority and rigid hierarchies, and has little patience for anyone who believes they have the right to own or control another person. Beneath her guarded exterior is someone who desperately wants connection and belonging, although she doesn't yet know how to accept either without expecting betrayal.
