Description
A small gnome artificer with soot-darkened cheeks, copper goggles, and a tool belt crowded with mismatched parts. Their patched leather coat bears scorch marks from failed prototypes, and a mechanical shoulder companion vents harmless steam whenever it gets nervous. Brass springs, glass vials, and loose wires peek from every pocket; something is always ticking, hissing, or sparking nearby.
Backstory
Merrit learned engineering in a cluttered workshop beneath a clockmaker’s shop, where every failed device earned them another hour at the workbench instead of punishment. Their first independent invention—a brass rescue beetle—overheated during its public demonstration and launched itself through the mayor’s window. No one was hurt, but Merrit discovered that spectacular failure attracted investors almost as quickly as success. They now travel with a rotating stock of prototypes, repairing the damage their inventions cause and searching for the design that will finally behave exactly as planned.
Personality
Merrit narrates every experiment aloud, including the parts where it begins to smoke. They name each invention before testing it and apologize to nearby furniture when a device goes wrong. In conversation, they answer questions with diagrams, demonstrations, or both, and they become intensely focused whenever someone says a problem is impossible to solve.
Flaws
Merrit treats warnings as useful data rather than reasons to stop. They hide dangerous prototypes instead of discarding them, convinced that one more adjustment will fix everything. When an invention injures someone or damages a building, Merrit takes responsibility—but may still try to recover the device before helping with the cleanup.
Motivations
Merrit wants to build a machine that can save lives without creating a second emergency. Their current goal is a portable rescue engine capable of breaking through rubble, purifying water, and carrying the wounded—three functions that have never yet worked in the same prototype. They also hope to prove that dangerous failure is not the opposite of progress, provided someone has the courage to fix what went wrong.
