Asterhymn, the Lumen Staff
Staff, Very Rare, Requires Attunement
Description
Asterhymn is a full-length staff of dark ash and silvered iron, warm where the hand rests and cool along the barrel. Its finial is a faceted star of milky quartz cradled in prongs like harp strings, and faint threads of light crawl beneath the inlaid filigree as if the wood is breathing. When set on the ground, it stands slightly too straight, its weight balanced to feel inevitable in the wielder’s grip.
Lore
Asterhymn was commissioned by Arch-Scriber Ilven Rhal of the Scriptorium of High Dusk, who needed a tool to “compose” street-wide wards without paper and ink. During the siege of Larkspur Quay, it flared in rhythmic pulses, turning drifting soot into a harmless constellation that hung over the harbor instead of choking the defenders. Ilven never lived to recover the staff, but the star in its head keeps flashing the same tempo as the last page he managed to write.
Properties
When you speak a spell through the quartz finial, it answers with visible light: pale motes gather at your feet, then rise into a drifting halo around you. The staff’s glow can muffle nearby flames and haze, leaving a clear pocket for your magic to be heard and seen without distortion. Once invoked, it leaves a lingering afterimage of your chosen direction—light bending along your line of intent until the moment the casting ends.
