Groknar

Groknar

Adventuring Group Benefactor, Orc, Monk, Lawful Evil

Description

A level 15 Orc Dhampir monk who serves as the benefactor of an adventuring group.

Backstory

Groknar was raised in a house where affection was a currency and every kindness carried a debt. His father praised him only after a successful lie, his mother threatened him with abandonment whenever he resisted, and his older siblings taught him that the safest place in an argument belonged to whoever spoke first and loudest. Mistakes brought beatings; tears brought mockery. By twelve, Groknar could tell which family member needed flattery, which wanted fear, and which would accept a scapegoat. He learned to survive by giving each of them a different version of the truth.

A wandering monastery took him in after his father sold him to settle a gambling debt. The monks gave him food, rules, and a room with a door that locked from the inside. Groknar mastered their discipline quickly, but treated every lesson as another weapon: silence became a way to make others confess, patience became a means of waiting out resistance, and generosity became an investment. When his family came demanding his return, Groknar did not fight them. He forged letters implicating them in theft, turned the village against their allies, and watched the household collapse under punishments he had arranged from the monastery’s gate. He left that same night, carrying nothing but his prayer beads and the certainty that mercy was simply control with poorer planning.

Now Groknar funds adventurers because influence purchased through coin lasts longer than influence demanded by force. He pays promptly, offers useful information, and keeps careful records of every favor. He never gives a gift without naming its expected return, though he sometimes forgives a debt without explanation just to keep others uncertain. He dislikes shouting, unexpected touch, and locked rooms. When someone raises a hand near him, his shoulders tighten before his face goes still; when praised, he searches for the hidden hook. His dhampir hunger makes intimacy harder still, and he keeps his distance rather than risk needing anyone.

Personality

Groknar remains unnervingly calm when plans collapse, enemies threaten him, or blood stains his robes. He answers panic with measured questions, studies every exit, and never raises his voice; anger appears only as a slight tightening of his prayer beads. His ambition governs every choice: each alliance, expedition, and favor must move him closer to ascending beyond mortality and becoming a demigod. He rewards competence, punishes disobedience without theatrics, and treats adventurers as valuable instruments rather than friends. Groknar offers clear terms and keeps every promise, but expects exact repayment. He accepts setbacks without complaint, recording them as debts to settle or lessons to exploit.
