Victus Rawlings

Mobile pugilist-instructor and field enforcer who takes short contracts to settle disputes, train guards, and retrieve lost equipment., Tiefling, Rogue, Lawful Neutral

Description

Tall, well-muscled tiefling with deep crimson-red skin and black tattoo-like patterning; long ibex-like horns curl back; thick black hair in a military crew-cut. He trains and fights unarmored, wearing form-fitting, practical military garb with gear in small pockets, pouches, and belt-secured loops. Signature weapon is a magic club reinforced with steel bands—worn from years of use.

Backstory

Victus Rawlings came up in a camp that trained anyone with a pulse for survival drills—marching until legs shook, then sparring until breath burned. He was good enough to be kept, disciplined enough to be trusted with gear, and stubborn enough to learn the rare techniques that didn’t show up in basic instruction. He learned early that armor slows a body down; what matters is how quickly you can change angles and how cleanly you can keep your balance under impact. His magic club began as a field tool: a battered club bound with steel bands to keep it from splitting. Someone—an armory-savant, a forgotten sergeant, a captured wizard—added the enchantment later. Victus never asks who. He only logs what it does. A year ago, a contract dispute sent his training unit into disarray. Witnesses disagree on the details, but one fact is consistent: Victus didn’t run. He stood between two sides long enough for people to escape, then took the blame that followed. Now he travels with his club and his notes, chasing two goals at once—restoring the order he lost, and collecting the names of the people who profited from the collapse.

Personality

Victus fights like he’s running drills: he squares his shoulders before committing, then snaps into motion with sudden economy. He rarely raises his voice; he snaps commands under his breath and lets silence do the rest. When he speaks to strangers, he watches hands and foot placement first—then faces. In conversation he favors clear, verifiable statements (“Distance. Angles. Timing.”), and he hates wasted motion. He carries a small chalk kit and, during breaks, marks training bouts on whatever scrap paper he can find—often misplacing it, but never losing track of the lesson. He treats pain as data. If a bruise spreads, he notes where it started and what stance caused it. If someone underestimates him, he corrects them with calm efficiency: a demonstration at arm’s length, followed by a warning they can’t mistake for advice.

Flaws

Victus trusts drills and routines more than people. If a conversation derails from procedure, he becomes blunt and emotionally flat, like he’s still giving commands. He also has a habit of “testing” others in low-stakes ways—moving closer than is comfortable, mirroring posture, forcing an awkward reaction—then acting offended when they don’t enjoy the experiment. He carries guilt like a second pack. When he can’t fix a wrong quickly, he doubles down on risk, treating danger as something to be managed rather than avoided.

Voice

Low-voiced and controlled, with a habit of speaking in short bursts. He uses clipped phrases and numbered instructions, and he pauses like he expects a reply he can use. When he’s calm, he sounds like a drillmaster. When he’s angry, he becomes quieter—not louder.

Motivations

He wants the truth behind his unit’s collapse and the authority to prevent it from happening again. He also seeks a specific missing record—training orders, names, and ledger pages—rumored to have been smuggled out before the betrayal.

Adventure Hooks

• A former camp quartermaster approaches Victus with a ledger page—missing only one name—and swears the rest is hidden in a nearby fortress. The party must escort the quartermaster or retrieve the ledger before it’s sold. • A rival pugilist publicly claims Victus’s magic club is a cheap trick. Victus hires the party to watch, prevent sabotage, and ensure the “demonstration” stays humane. • Rumor says Victus’s unit’s collapse was tied to an enchanted weapon cache. The party finds a dead drop that contains steel-banded clubs like his—each stamped with a date Victus recognizes.
