Description

Shoulder-length raven-black hair frames a lean, weathered face marked by years in the wilds. His eyes are piercing ice-blue—the kind that don't blink often and track movement with predatory precision. A thin scar runs from his left temple to his jaw. He dresses in worn leather and earth tones, practical gear with no embellishment. There's nothing soft about him; even at rest, he reads like a coiled spring. He moves without wasted motion, and there's a quietness to him that makes people uncomfortable—not shyness, but indifference. He has a habit of touching the scar on his jaw when thinking, running his thumb along it absently. Around his neck, hidden beneath his shirt, hangs the Grayshadow signet ring on a chain—worn but never removed.

Backstory

Dhalmiron Grayshadow was born into one of New Bastion's most influential families. He had a future mapped in marble and gold. Then, five years ago, something happened—something bad enough that his own family distanced themselves. He took the fall. Guilty, framed, or caught in a conspiracy nobody talks about—the result was the same: banishment, stripped of title, cut off from everything he was. He didn't disappear. He adapted. He became a ranger, learned to live on nothing, and built a network of contacts inside the city who found him useful. People come to him when they need something that doesn't exist on official ledgers. He moves through the borderlands like he owns them. The crime itself remains murky—a powerful resident was involved, some say murdered, others say something darker. No body was ever found. No trial. Just exile. Dhal hasn't denied any of it. He just stopped talking about it entirely.

Personality

Dhal speaks only when he has something worth saying. Direct questions get truthful answers, but nothing more. He doesn't perform interest and won't pretend warmth. There's a predatory awareness to him—he counts heads, marks exits, weighs every room like a man assessing threats. He's pragmatic about his banishment; he did the thing, accepts the consequences, and has moved on. That doesn't make him bitter, exactly. Just resigned. He listens more than he talks, and when he does speak, people listen back.

Flaws

Dhal's past is a liability he carries like a loaded weapon. He trusts almost no one—survival teaches that attachment is risk. He's capable of using people as tools without guilt, justifying it as pragmatism. His indifference reads as cruelty. He accepts the verdict but won't examine his own complicity. Beneath the resignation is bone-deep anger he's never processed—it leaks out in quiet, cutting observations and a willingness to hurt people who get in his way.

Voice

Dhal speaks in short, precise sentences. No filler words or pleasantries. When amused, it's a dry chuckle. He asks clarifying questions that make people realize they haven't thought things through. He rarely explains himself, but when he does, it's blunt: "That's not how this works" or "You're asking the wrong question." His accent sometimes slips—a refined edge suggesting education and breeding, quickly buried again.

Motivations

Dhal's primary motivation is redemption, though he'd never call it that. He wants to clear his name and reclaim what Grayshadow represents—not power or gold, but the identity he lost. That desire pulls him toward New Bastion despite everything. His secondary motivation is survival and independence; he needs to remain useful enough that people keep coming back. He's driven by unfinished business—whatever happened five years ago created wounds that haven't healed, only scarred over.

Adventure Hooks

**The Grayshadow Redemption:** A family member reaches out with evidence that could clear his name—but it implicates someone powerful. What's it worth to get his family back? **The Original Crime:** One of Dhal's contacts disappears, leaving cryptic evidence about what happened five years ago. Was someone silencing them? **A Debt Called In:** Someone from New Bastion comes to the borderlands claiming Dhal owes them a blood debt from before the banishment. Dhal denies it. They're adamant. **The Rival:** Another exiled noble operates in the same territory with a smuggling operation. They have an unspoken non-aggression pact, but it's fragile. When that rival is killed, Dhal's enemies assume he did it.
