Kaelen Thorneood
Ravenfolk, Ranger, Chaotic Good
Description
A lean Ravenfolk ranger with charcoal-black feathers, a hooked silver-gray beak, and amber eyes that track movement from impossible distances. His travel cloak is patched with scraps of canvas and crow feathers, while a longbow of dark yew rests across his back. Mud stains his taloned boots, and small brass charms hang from his belt beside flint, snares, and a weathered field journal.
Backstory
He was raised among cliffside rookeries where every fledgling learned to read storm clouds, watch the roads, and share warnings before sharing food. As a young scout, he discovered a smuggler's trail leading to a village held under threat. His elders ordered him to observe and wait for proof; he ignored them, cut the prisoners loose, and led the smugglers into a ravine where the village militia could surround them. The rescue saved dozens of lives but cost his rookery a fragile trade alliance. He now travels from frontier to frontier, helping people abandoned by laws that protect the powerful and recording every road, den, and hidden pass he finds.
Personality
He studies exits before sitting down and taps two claws against his bow whenever someone lies. He speaks in short, practical sentences, but becomes unexpectedly theatrical when telling stories around a fire. He leaves small piles of shiny buttons, coins, or colored glass at shrines and trail markers for travelers who come after him. When faced with an unfair order, he smiles, says “That sounds like your problem,” and starts cutting the prisoners free.
Flaws
He treats patience as an excuse used by people who are safe. He breaks agreements the moment he decides the other side has acted unjustly, even when innocent companions will pay the price. Praise makes him suspicious, while criticism sends him into reckless contests meant to prove he cannot be controlled. He keeps secrets from allies if he believes the truth might make them hesitate.
Motivations
He wants to build a network of safe paths, hidden shelters, and trusted signals across the frontier so no traveler has to face danger alone. He hunts the smuggler captain whose escape ruined his rookery's standing and left several rescued villagers vulnerable to retaliation. Each time he helps someone defy an unjust authority, he hopes to prove that freedom survives through ordinary acts of refusal.
