Character

Unnamed Gentle Half-Orc Paladin

Half-Orc, Paladin, Lawful Good

Description

A gentle half-orc paladin in well-kept plate armor, carrying a blunted warhammer and a shield marked with a repaired silver clasp. Their broad frame and tusks contrast with their careful hands, soft voice, and patient gaze. Every weapon bears visible signs of deliberate dulling; their shield is polished but scarred from interposing it between enemies and harm.

Backstory

They grew up in a border village where half-orcs were welcomed only when the harvest was good and blamed whenever the roads became dangerous. As a child, they watched a raider surrender after recognizing the village healer among the defenders. The healer lowered her knife, treated the raider’s wounds, and later helped him find work beyond the border. Years afterward, that same man returned with a wagon of grain during a famine, bringing three former raiders with him.

That choice became the foundation of their oath. They trained as a paladin to place their body between the violent and the vulnerable, but refused to accept killing as the price of victory. Since then, they have walked from battlefield to courtroom, disarming tyrants, binding murderers, and pressing even the cruelest captives to name the people they harmed. Some have changed. Some have escaped and hurt others. They carry both kinds of names in the same ledger, determined to learn where mercy ends and negligence begins.

Personality

They ask an enemy’s name before asking what crime they committed, and offer water before demanding surrender. In conversation, they leave long pauses for frightened people to find their words. They mend broken gear at the campfire, collect the weapons taken from defeated foes, and return them when their owners have proven they can use them safely. They never call a villain evil to their face; they name the harm, the victims, and the choice that must change.

Flaws

They will risk an entire mission to rescue someone who has already surrendered, even when the delay endangers their companions. They mistake remorseful words for the first signs of redemption and have been deceived by enemies who learned to perform regret. When an ally kills a helpless foe, they become cold and judgmental, treating the act as a personal failure of trust.

Motivations

They believe justice must leave a door open for change. Their oath demands that they stop violence, protect its victims, and give the guilty a chance to repair what they broke. They seek proof that mercy can produce safer communities, not just cleaner consciences, and keep a ledger of former enemies who chose a better life after being spared.
