Nyx
Elf, Rogue, Chaotic Good
Description
I picture Nyx as visibly feminine, elegant, and dangerous—someone who could pass for Chelaxian nobility until you notice how closely she watches every exit.
She is tall and slender, even for an elf, with warm olive skin and sharply defined features. Her long black hair has a subtle crimson sheen and is usually worn in a loose side braid, secured with a lockpick disguised as a hairpin. Her eyes betray her proteankin heritage: one is storm-gray, while the other slowly shifts between amber, violet, and sea-green. Faint, iridescent markings resembling tiny scales appear around that eye and along one side of her neck, changing slightly whenever she becomes emotional.
Her clothing retains the refined cut of Chelaxian fashion but rejects its ornamentation: a fitted charcoal coat, dark burgundy blouse, high leather boots, slim gloves, and flexible black armor hidden beneath. Every Chelaxian emblem has been carefully removed, leaving visible stitch marks where insignia once rested.
She carries a narrow rapier and several concealed knives, although her most treasured possession is a battered leather lockpick case. A small winged rapier—Arazni’s symbol—is embroidered inside her coat in crimson thread, where only she and those she trusts can see it.
Her jewelry is sparse but deliberate:
A single red-fox earring honoring Arazni
A broken iron chain wrapped around one wrist
A Chelaxian signet ring worn backward, its crest filed away
A thin crimson ribbon woven through her braid
Nyx rarely looks frightened. When threatened, she becomes unnervingly still, one hand drifting toward a hidden blade while a faint smile suggests that she has already found the nearest escape route.
Backstory
Nyx was born in Cheliax but raised almost entirely among humans. Their elven family concealed their proteankin nature, knowing that the unpredictable touch of the Maelstrom would invite suspicion in a nation obsessed with infernal order and obedience.
As a Forlorn elf, Nyx watched childhood companions grow old while House Thrune remained. Officials changed, laws changed, and new banners replaced weathered ones—but the cruelty beneath them endured.
Nyx survived by becoming useful.
A Chelaxian magistrate employed them as a discreet locksmith, courier, and procurer of things that inconveniently belonged to someone else. Nyx opened confiscated strongboxes, planted evidence, and retrieved compromising letters from political enemies. They told themselves that survival was not the same as loyalty.
Then they were ordered to steal a family’s proof of innocence before a show trial.
Nyx took the evidence—but gave it to the accused rather than the magistrate. The family escaped. Nyx was exposed, imprisoned, and marked as a traitor.
In prison, another captive taught them a forbidden prayer to Arazni:
Survival is not submission. What they did to you does not belong to them.
Nyx escaped by stealing the jailer’s keys and leaving every occupied cell unlocked. They fled Cheliax for Isger, only to discover Chelaxian uniforms, laws, and gallows waiting there too. Exile had changed the scenery, not the tyranny.
Their entrance into the Hellbreakers League came through one final theft. Nyx lifted a coded payroll ledger from a Chelaxian agent, expecting to sell it. Upon realizing it identified collaborators and scheduled Hellknight movements, they instead delivered it to a League contact. That information saved several Isgeri families from arrest.
The Hellbreakers offered Nyx membership. Nyx accepted—not because they suddenly considered themselves heroic, but because running had ceased to feel like survival.
Now they steal keys, military orders, blackmail records, and the wealth tyrants use to purchase obedience. They do not steal from civilians, comrades, refugees, or prisoners. Every lock they open is another small denial of the idea that Cheliax owns anything simply because it has placed chains around it.
Personality
A tall, sharp-featured elven woman dressed in charcoal and crimson, with braided black hair and mismatched, subtly shifting eyes. Iridescent markings reveal the chaotic blood in her veins, while removed Chelaxian insignia leave scars upon her otherwise elegant clothing. She carries herself with guarded dignity—always composed, always watching, and never far from a concealed blade.
