Dera Cairn
Half-Elf, Cleric, Lawful Good
Description
Dera Cairn wears weathered leather, scuffed boots, and a grey traveler's cloak repaired more often than replaced. A worn silver sunburst of Iomedae hangs at her throat, its edges smooth from decades of prayer. Her half-elf face is ageless and tired, marked by the quiet endurance of someone who has survived too much. Her hands are calloused, scarred, and steady—healer's hands that have also held a sword and lit a pyre. She carries a well-used healer's kit and a small leather-bound prayer book filled with names. Nothing she owns is decorative; every item serves a purpose.
Backstory
Dera spent twenty years as a weapon of war, serving under Iomedae's banner in Mendev. She learned to interrogate, burn, and make people confess—including people who had done nothing wrong. When the war ended, she visited the families of those she had killed. Some forgave her. Some drove her away. She accepted both judgments.
For five years, she used the same scarred hands to put out the fires she had once helped light, treating the wounded wherever roads and battlefields carried her. She kept a leather prayer book filled with names: the people she killed and the people she feared she might forget. Each morning, she read it alone.
Seven years ago, Dera began walking. She told herself she was passing through each settlement, then told herself she would leave when the work was done. The work never ended. At last she reached the Stolen Lands, the edge of the map, hoping to disappear where no one knew her history. She remains because she has not yet found a reason—or a way—to leave.
Personality
Dera speaks in short, measured sentences, with a faint Mendevian accent. She listens longer than most people can tolerate, then asks the question everyone else avoided. At a campfire, she sits at the edge of the light and watches the flames without explaining what she sees.
She moves with deliberate economy. Her hand checks the healer's kit before it reaches for a weapon, and her fingers find the worn sunburst of Iomedae whenever she thinks no one is watching. She does not command a room; she makes it still. People lower their voices around her because she is fully present, not because she demands attention.
Flaws
Dera cannot forgive herself. She can accept another person's anger, grief, or refusal to absolve her, but she treats her own remorse as a sentence that must never end. She keeps every name in her prayer book because forgetting feels like another form of murder.
She avoids promises that imply a future. When others speak of settling down, she finds a task elsewhere. Peace leaves her restless; silence gives old orders room to return. She knows how to protect people in danger, but not how to remain with them after the danger has passed.
Motivations
Dera wants to heal because it is the one thing her hands have done without leaving a stain. She treats the wounded with absolute focus, regardless of allegiance or whether they can repay her.
She came to the Stolen Lands to disappear, but the people and dangers there keep giving her reasons to stay. She wants forgiveness, though she no longer expects to receive it. More than either, she wants to learn whether a person who spent twenty years at war can build a life after the battlefield.
“I spent twenty years lighting fires. Then I spent five years putting them out. And then I spent seven years learning that the world doesn't end when the war does. It just gets quieter. And that's harder.”
