Vellumbrand, the Oath-Cut Saber

Vellumbrand, the Oath-Cut Saber

Weapon, Rare, Requires Attunement

Description

Vellumbrand is a narrow, sharply curved sabre with a mirror-bright blade etched like layered script. Its fuller is lined with faint mother-of-pearl that catches light along one edge, while the grip is wrapped in dark oiled leather and wrapped again with a thin silver filigree that warms against the palm. The weapon feels balanced for a quick, hero-forward draw, with a slight weight shift toward the tip.

Lore

It was commissioned for Lady Serynn Halewick, a magistrate of the Salt Marches who insisted that every duel be judged by witnesses rather than brawlers. During the trial that followed the murder of her brother, Vellumbrand was used to cut a traitor’s binding without harming the innocent man whose life depended on it. After Serynn’s own last oath—spoken beside a courthouse bonfire—the blade’s etched “script” was said to darken to match the words she would never take back.

Properties

When drawn and gripped with intent, the blade’s etched lines glow softly as if ink were being written beneath the steel. It reveals the sharpest outcome of a spoken promise from the wielder: words said with sincerity sharpen the edge toward truth, while empty declarations dull its certainty. In close combat, it encourages decisive motion, nudging the wielder’s strikes to land with an almost ceremonial precision.
