Unnamed Character

Human, Wizard, Neutral Good

Physical Description

Kaelen has the look of a scholar who spends as much time outdoors as he does hunched over dusty tomes—though the dusty tomes are definitely still a factor.

Hair

His hair is a dimensional ash-brown, a cool-toned medium brown heavily streaked with sun-bleached, sandy-blonde highlights. The lighter streaks concentrate on the top layers, the curtain pieces framing his face, and toward the ends, giving it a natural, lived-in "bronde" look. He wears it in a shoulder-length shag with heavy, sweeping layers. Long, textured bangs sweep across his forehead to one side, and the face-framing layers create a curtain effect around his cheekbones. He typically parts it loosely off-center, letting the layers fall forward in a messy, textured way.

Eyes

Hazel-green with flecks of gold. They catch the light in interesting ways, and when he's reading omens, they seem to focus on something just beyond what others can see. He wears large, wire-frame navigator-style glasses with translucent silver rims that visually widen and frame his eye area.

Face

He has fair, pale skin with cool, rosy undertones. His cheeks and the bridge of his nose carry a natural flush. His face is oblong and slightly elongated, with a moderately defined jawline and a prominent, slightly pointed chin with a natural cleft. His cheekbones are high but soft. On his right cheek, he has two prominent dark brown moles, one slightly above the other. He maintains light, patchy stubble over his upper lip, chin, and jawline—a mix of light brown and blonde that creates a visible shadow on his lower face.

Build

He is lean and wiry, more suited to a long day of walking with a heavy pack than to lifting boulders. His movements are calm and deliberate, with an unhurried quality that matches his laid-back demeanor.

Clothing

He dresses practically, favoring durable traveling clothes in earthy tones—browns, greys, deep greens—with a well-worn traveling coat that has seen its share of rain and dust. His pockets are stuffed with small curiosities: a smooth river stone, a handful of bird feathers, a worn deck of fortune-telling cards.

Backstory

Kaelen was not born a prodigy. He was born curious.

He grew up in a small coastal town, the son of a fisherman and a weaver. From an early age, he was drawn to the sky and the sea—watching birds, tracing cloud patterns, studying the way waves broke on the shore. His grandmother, a weathered woman with sharp eyes, noticed this and taught him to read the signs: "The gulls fly inland before a storm, boy. The sea tells you what's coming, if you know how to listen."

When he was 17, a traveling scholar of the Seers of Sea and Sky passed through his village. The scholar, a wiry woman named Elara, saw Kaelen sitting on the beach, sketching the flight paths of seabirds in the sand. She asked him what he was doing. He said, "I'm figuring out where the wind is going."

She laughed and handed him a worn deck of fortune-telling cards. "Tell me something true, and I'll give you a better one."

He did. She did.

Kaelen left his village with Elara, spending the next several years traveling between the Seers' libraries, learning to read omens in the natural world—the stars, the waves, the flight of birds, the crack of thunder. He learned that divination is not about seeing the future but about understanding the present with such clarity that the future becomes obvious.

His official training ended when Elara gave him a journal, a compass, and a handful of coin. "You've got the gift, but the gift needs practice. Go out and read the world. Send me a letter when you find something interesting."

He's been wandering ever since, taking odd jobs, reading fortunes, and documenting his findings. He's not famous. He's not powerful. But he's good at what he does, and the world is full of patterns waiting to be read.

Personality

Demeanor

Kaelen is relaxed, observant, and quietly witty. He has the laid-back energy of someone who has learned that the universe will unfold as it will—and who has also learned that he can nudge that unfolding in his favor. He smiles easily, and his laugh lines suggest he's done a lot of it.

He is not dramatic or brooding. He doesn't speak in riddles or act mysterious. Instead, he is disarmingly normal, the kind of person who might read your fortune while sharing a drink and then ask if you want to hear a stupid joke he heard in a tavern.

Philosophy

Kaelen believes that fate is not a fixed line but a river. It has currents, yes, and it flows in certain directions, but you can read the patterns on the water, and with skill and luck, you can change course. He treats his divination magic not as prophecy but as clarity—seeing what is, what might be, and what can be nudged.

Speech Patterns

  • Casual but thoughtful

  • Uses "I reckon" and "I figure" often

  • Occasionally drops obscure references to texts or omens, always with a half-smile

  • Tends to ask questions rather than give direct answers: "What do you think the pattern means?"

Ideals

  • Knowledge: The universe is full of patterns, and understanding them is the first step toward wisdom.

  • Freedom: Fate is a guide, not a cage.

  • Community: Omens are meant to be shared. A prophecy hoarded is a prophecy wasted.

Bonds

  • He owes a debt to the Seers of Sea and Sky, who took him in and taught him to read the world. He still sends letters to his mentors when he finds something interesting.

  • He carries his mentor's old deck of fortune-telling cards, worn and frayed, as a reminder of where he started.

Flaws

  • He has a habit of reading omens in everything—a bird's flight path, the crack in a teacup, the way the light hits a window. Sometimes he's right. Sometimes he's just seeing patterns that aren't there.

  • He can be a bit too casual about danger, trusting that his luck will get him out of trouble.
