Sly answers questions with a question, palms coins during conversations, and smiles whenever someone says, “That can’t be done.” He keeps three plans ready, though he rarely admits which one is real. Compliments make him suspicious; bargains make him attentive.

Sly cannot resist showing that he is the cleverest person in the room. He lies when a simple truth would serve, trusts his own escape plans too much, and treats promises as puzzles whose wording matters more than their intent.

Sly wants enough forbidden knowledge and stolen coin to buy freedom from every master, creditor, and rival who has ever claimed him. He also seeks the one spell that can erase a name from another person’s memory—and fears someone already used it on him.
