Nox Wizzlewump

Nox Wizzlewump

Goblin, Cleric, Chaotic Neutral

Description

Nox Wizzlewump moves like a puppet tugged by impatient strings—quick, jerky, and never quite welcoming. His green skin is mottled the color of wet moss, dusted with ash-gray specks like soot caught in fog. Thin, soot-streaked lines run from brow to cheeks, and his nicked, uneven ears wear brass studs that click softly when he turns. He keeps his hair cropped tight, save for two short tufts that curl upward like smoke that refuses to settle.

Twilight arrives around his gear before his face can finish smiling. He wears a compact steel breastplate fitted to his goblin frame, etched with crescent motifs that never align cleanly—some facing left, others right, as if the metal can’t decide which night it belongs to. Straps of midnight-blue cloth wrap his armor, stained at the edges bruised violet, hanging from his shoulders with a faint, purposeful sway. Over his left shoulder, a short chain-linked tabard of dark leather rattles with irregular clinks; milky lantern-glass beads at a few rings glow for a heartbeat when he lifts his hand.

At his hip hangs a palm-sized reliquary tin with a sliding latch. Inside, an obsidian-black crystal periodically fogs, cooling like it’s remembering a night sky. His shield is a battered, round buckler with a thick iron rim, painted in layered “night circle” rings that fade from near-black to twilight-blue. Dents pockmark the face like hail, yet paint never cracks there—dark swirls creep outward whenever the shield takes a hit.

When he fights, he chooses precision over force: a goblin-sized rapier that’s too fine for the rest of him. Its base bears a spiral of shallow runes that catch light in slow pulses, and a tiny silver crescent at the crossguard flashes pale lavender when he tests the blade’s weight.

His twilight holy symbols—an embossed half-moon with a tiny closed eye and crescent markings on his armor and shield—shift at prayer. When Nox murmurs his clipped, half-joking warning, the metal darkens first, then brightens at the edges to muted blue-violet as motes drift up from the plate and vanish around shoulder height. Chaotic in motion, unsettling in timing, he braces his shield and drives his thrusts into the gaps between moments when the light falters.

Backstory

Nox Wizzlewump grew up beneath the streets of Brinewake, surviving as a goblin urchin by scavenging, stealing, and staying one step ahead of trouble. He had no formal faith, only scraps of prayers copied from a stolen prayer book that he recited whenever fear threatened to overwhelm him. To Nox, the gods were less important than the hope their words inspired.

Everything changed when he stumbled across a wounded bugbear gloom stalker named Vurkash Mordrak, caught in a deadly trap while hunting something lurking beneath the city. Every instinct told Nox to run, but instead he threw himself into the trap, helping free the ranger before desperately reciting the broken prayers he'd memorized. To his surprise, they worked well enough to stop the bleeding. Together they fought off the thugs who had laid the ambush, and from that day forward the two became unlikely companions.

Vurkash saw in Nox someone who refused to give up, even without proper training. Nox saw someone he had refused to let die. They left Brinewake together, tracking the conspiracy behind the attack and uncovering evidence that powerful people had wanted Vurkash silenced. Along the way, Nox's rough, practical magic kept the ranger alive through monsters, traps, and countless close calls, while Vurkash taught him how to survive beyond the city streets.

Nox is no shining hero. He will steal food if someone is starving, lie to protect an innocent, and bend almost any rule if it keeps his friends alive. His faith is practical rather than pious, and his healing is as rough around the edges as he is. Above all else, he has one unwavering promise: Vurkash will never face death alone again. If darkness closes in, Nox will already be there—prayer on his lips, weapon in hand, determined to pull his friend back one more time.

Personality

Nox Wizzlewump keeps one hand on his reliquary tin the way other people keep a knife. He scouts with stolen habits—pauses to listen to gutter-drips and distant footsteps, counts exits by sightline, and pockets anything useful before deciding if he even trusts you.

He’s resourceful with no patience for ceremony. If there’s a lock, a latch, or a loose board, he’ll test it; if there’s a gap in a guard’s routine, he’ll slip through. His curiosity shows up as interruptions—he’ll lean in, ask one sharp question, then pretend he was just checking the angle of your shadow.

Cautious doesn’t mean timid. Nox jitters before he acts—shoulders tight, chained tabard clicking, prayers half-muttered like jokes—then commits fast once the risk looks survivable. When the streets turn mean, he chooses precision over panic, moving like he’s always stealing time from danger.

He’s hardened, but loyalty has teeth. He’ll steal food for starving strangers and lie through his grin to keep an innocent from getting hurt, but he won’t trade his friends. If something closes in, he’s already halfway to the trap—faith-prayer in his mouth, blade in hand—because Vurkash can’t face death alone.
