Character

Hilda Honeybun

Halfling, Cleric, Chaotic Good

Description

An elderly halfling grandmother with a round, kindly face, silver hair braided and tucked beneath a flour-dusted kerchief, and soft brown eyes behind brass spectacles. She wears a well-mended cream blouse, a honey-yellow wool shawl, a sturdy brown skirt, and comfortable leather shoes. Her holy symbol hangs from a ribbon at her throat beside a wooden spoon, and her satchel smells of rosemary, beeswax, and fresh-baked bread.

Backstory

Hilda spent forty years running the Honeybun bakery beside the village shrine, raising three children, burying a husband, and learning which ailments yielded to tea and which required prayer. When a winter fever swept through the valley, the shrine’s priest died before help arrived. Hilda kept the sick alive with broth, clean linens, and stubborn faith until dawn. The following spring, the village gave her the priest’s holy symbol. She has carried it ever since, tending the poor, blessing newborns, and scolding anyone who mistakes age for weakness.

Personality

Hilda feeds people before she asks what brought them to her door. She calls strangers “dearheart,” packs extra biscuits into every traveler’s bag, and taps her wooden spoon twice against the table when someone is being foolish. Her prayers sound like household advice: warm, practical, and impossible to ignore.

Flaws

Hilda hides pain behind chores and refuses help until she drops something or falls asleep sitting up. She meddles in other people’s romances, family arguments, and meal choices with equal confidence. When frightened, she becomes bossy, handing out orders so quickly that she forgets to listen.

Motivations

Hilda wants every person under her care to have a safe bed, a full stomach, and someone who will speak their name after they are gone. She travels because the valley’s fever was not natural, and she suspects the sickness will return unless she finds who first carried it there. Until then, she treats the road as an extension of her parish.
