Jysela Thryn
Drow, Druid, Chaotic Good
Speaks softly until someone threatens the helpless; then her calm turns sharp as a drawn thorn.
Trusts beasts faster than nobles, and studies a stranger’s treatment of animals before offering her own hand.
Uses darkness, tangled roots, and sudden changes of shape to divide enemies rather than meet them head-on.
Marks safe trails with three short scratches at the base of a tree; marks danger with a circle cut through the bark.
Keeps her hood up in bright sunlight, but never hides her white hair or red eyes when challenged.
Collects fallen feathers, shed snakeskin, and unusual seeds in small bone vials tied to her belt.
Refuses to kill spiders, calling them “old cousins,” though she has no patience for Lolth’s servants.
Sleeps lightly beneath open sky, with one hand resting on a sprig of holly or a smooth piece of underdark stone.
Carries the habits of the deep places: counts exits, avoids standing beneath ledges, and listens for footsteps before entering a cavern.
Believes freedom is proved through action; she will break a chain, open a cage, or defy a cruel law before asking whether the cost is wise.
Description
Lean and long-limbed, built for climbing, sprinting, and slipping through dense undergrowth.
Appears in her late twenties, with a youthful face sharpened by a wary, outdoorsworn expression.
Thick white hair hangs to her waist in loose braids, threaded with crow feathers, dried seedpods, and strips of green cloth.
Deep violet eyes catch flecks of silver in bright light; her gaze is quick, curious, and difficult to intimidate.
Wears layered charcoal leathers beneath a moss-green cloak, with a bark-brown satchel of herbs, flint, and small animal bones.
A living vine coils around her left forearm, its tiny leaves blooming when she uses magic.
One pointed ear bears three mismatched copper rings; a pale claw-mark runs from her right cheek to the edge of her jaw.
Carries the scent of rain, crushed mint, and woodsmoke, with a presence as watchful and untamed as a fox at the edge of a firelight.
Backstory
Jysela Thryn was born beneath a city of black stone, where every living thing was measured by its usefulness. Her family served a noble house that cultivated poisonous fungi and bred pale cave-lizards for war. Jysela spent her childhood tending the gardens, learning which molds healed burns, which roots stopped a heart, and which creatures bit only when cornered.
At sixteen, she found a wounded blindstag trapped in a hunting snare. Instead of reporting it, Jysela carried it into the lower tunnels and nursed it back to health. The animal led her to a hidden cavern where a colony of glowing moss grew around a spring of clean water. There she met an exile who taught her to listen to stone, fungus, insects, and the faint pulse of life beneath the earth. Jysela learned that nature did not belong to the powerful; it endured, adapted, and reclaimed what was stolen from it.
When her family discovered the cavern, they planned to drain the spring and turn the place into a poison garden. Jysela sabotaged the operation, freed several captive animals, and opened the gates of an underground river. The flood destroyed part of the estate and carried away the family’s stores. Jysela escaped through the tunnels with little more than a staff, a satchel of seeds, and the blindstag’s antler wrapped in cloth.
She now travels aboveground, helping villages survive blight, driving slavers from wild places, and treating wounded beasts before wounded soldiers. Sunlight still gives her headaches, open skies make her uneasy, and she has no patience for laws written by people who never touch the soil.
Jysela tells everyone the flood killed her former teacher. In truth, the exile survived—and has begun sending her messages carved into dead trees. Someone is searching for the hidden spring, and the next message may reveal why Jysela was chosen to guard it.
Personality
Keeps one hand on living bark, grass, or stone when speaking, as if checking that the world is still there beneath her feet.
Treats spiders, bats, and other hated creatures as honored guests; she will interrupt a conversation to move one from harm.
Answers insults about her drow heritage with a cheerful question: “Would you prefer I prove you wrong slowly or quickly?”
Trades favors instead of accepting charity, recording each debt with a charcoal mark on the inside of her wrist.
When frightened, becomes very still and starts naming nearby plants under her breath.
Breaks rules without hesitation when they protect cruelty, but becomes fiercely protective of any promise made to the helpless.
Jysela was born beneath the black towers of the Underdark, though the midwife who delivered her swore that her mother’s blood ran silver beneath the skin. Her father belonged to the noble house that claimed them both, yet no record names his lineage; some said he was a drow exile, others that he had crossed from a forest elf enclave and brought a dead star’s curse with him. On the night of Jysela’s birth, every fungus in the nursery withered, and a door appeared in the stone wall—opening not onto a tunnel, but a shore beneath a lightless sky. Her grandmother sealed it with blood and ordered the servants to forget. Years later, Jysela found the same mark carved inside the hidden spring: a black crescent wrapped around a white root. The exile who taught her to hear the earth called it an Abyssal scar. A voice from the Shadowfell called it a cradle.
