Her schemes grew bolder with each success. When one plan threatened the family’s standing and exposed how far she had gone, her relatives disowned her and erased her name from their household records. She left with her instrument, a few stolen keepsakes, and the conviction that exile was only another position from which to bargain.

She treats every conversation like a private performance, watching for the pause before an answer and the hand that reaches for a hidden purse.
