Captain of the Restless Tide

A Middle Eastern woman dressed as the captain of a pirate ship. She wears a weathered long coat over layered linen and dark riding trousers, with a wide sash crowded by brass charms, a curved saber, and a bone-handled pistol. Her dark hair is braided with copper beads and tucked beneath a battered captain’s hat marked by salt and candle soot. Kohl-rimmed eyes watch from beneath strong brows; a small gold nose ring catches the light. Her coat lining bears faded funerary script, and a string of finger bones hangs beside the compass at her belt. She carries the dry scent of myrrh, seawater, and old smoke.

She was born in a coastal city where her family prepared the dead for burial and taught mourners the prayers that guide a soul away from the shore. Her brother left home to serve aboard a merchant ship, then vanished during a crossing no storm record could explain. Years later, his ghost came to her family’s courtyard wearing seawater and spoke a single command: “Turn the ship before the bells.”

She sold the family house, bought a damaged sloop, and sailed west with six desperate hands. In a drowned chapel beneath a reef, she found her brother’s signet ring clenched in the fingers of a corpse. The dead rose when she touched it—not as monsters, but as sailors waiting for orders. She brought them aboard, repaired the sloop, and claimed the captain’s coat from the wreck of a navy vessel.

Now she commands a living crew by day and a silent crew belowdecks by night. Every port adds another rumor to her chart: bells ringing under calm water, lanterns moving beneath the waves, and a black-hulled fleet waiting for someone to give the order to turn.

She gives orders softly, forcing a crew to lean closer rather than raising her voice. She keeps a ledger of every favor owed to the dead and collects payment in names, teeth, or unfinished promises. When thinking, she rolls a brass funerary coin across her knuckles. She never interrupts a sailor who is speaking about someone they lost.

She treats grief as a resource and cannot resist bargaining with the dead, even when the living beg her to stop. Insults to her command earn a colder response than threats to her life. She hides exhaustion behind ceremony, refusing to admit when a spell has left her hands shaking or her vision blurred.

She seeks the scattered bones of her brother, whose ghost has appeared in her cabin three times but never spoken the same warning twice. She believes a vanished fleet lies beneath the western sea, crewed by sailors who died with their captain’s final order unfinished. She intends to find that fleet, learn what command her brother died carrying, and decide whether the dead deserve to keep obeying it.
