Galdren Virethas remained at school until the age of nineteen, studying letters, history, and the practical knowledge expected of a capable young man. He then spent a year learning the cleric’s work, tending the sick, cleaning wounds, and caring for people who had nowhere else to turn. At twenty, he went to war. For six years he served among soldiers and camp followers, treating injuries beneath canvas, carrying the dying out of battle, and offering comfort when medicine and prayer could no longer save them. He returned at twenty-six with a cleric’s training hardened by war and a clear purpose: to keep helping the living, no matter which side of the battlefield they came from.
