Magistrate Alwen Crest

A distant cousin of an Oldford noble family, Alwen Crest was sent to Saltreach as a political inconvenience. He initially appears weak and indecisive, while quietly studying who controls the town before choosing his allies. He sees the Brass Compass as a possible neutral force capable of weakening the Merchant Compact. Alwen hates having been sent to Oldford.

Alwen was born a distant cousin to Oldford’s ruling family, close enough to carry the Crest name but too far from inheritance to command respect. When factional disputes made him inconvenient, the family appointed him magistrate of Saltreach and called the posting an honor. He recognized the exile beneath the ceremony and arrived determined not to become another discarded relation. Since then, he has kept his judgments narrow while mapping the town’s debts, loyalties, and quiet threats. His private plan is to use the Brass Compass as a neutral counterweight against the Merchant Compact, then return to Oldford with enough influence to make his family regret sending him away.

Alwen speaks softly and leaves pauses between questions, letting impatient people fill the silence. He keeps one hand on the arm of his chair during tense conversations and taps the wood twice when someone lies. He offers mild concessions in public, then remembers every favor and insult. His courtesy becomes clipped whenever Oldford is mentioned.
