Backstory

Seraph was born to Xandar Wormwood, a rock gnome, and was raised by both him and his stepmother Daroth Stonebreaker, a dwarf whose strength and warmth balanced Xandar's gentle nature. In his early years, Seraph was a bright child—quick to laugh, quicker to scheme. He delighted in harmless pranks on the townsfolk of Deepdelver's Rest, even occasionally testing the patience of Daroth herself with some clever mischief. Those were years of lightness, of a child who belonged and was loved.

Everything changed the day the mines collapsed. Xandar rushed into the chaos to help trapped gnomes and dwarves escape the falling stone. Daroth fought her way in after him, desperate to pull him back. But the weight was too great, the collapse too sudden. Xandar never came out. Neither did Daroth at first—until finally, grief-stricken and broken, she crawled back through the rubble without him.

Seraph was there when they brought his father's body back. In that moment, something inside the bright, pranking child shattered and reformed into something harder. The boy who had once delighted in tricks became obsessed with forces beyond his control—with gravity, with weight, with the mathematics of collapse and resistance. He made a vow that day, whispered over his father's grave: he would become the strongest wizard to ever live. He would master gravity itself. He would ensure that no one he loved would ever be crushed beneath forces he could control. Nothing—no distraction, no comfort, no moment of ease—would stand between him and that goal.

Daroth raised him through those darker years, watching her stepson transform into something singular and driven. She never stopped loving him, and Seraph never stopped loving her, but love and presence became different things. Seraph withdrew into himself, into his studies, into the cold mathematics of power. The pranks stopped. The laughter became rare. What remained was a young gnome consumed by singular purpose: strength, mastery, the absolute refusal to be helpless again.

Personality

Kind but profoundly quiet—the type to notice when someone is struggling and quietly help without fanfare, but only if he deems them worthy of it. With strangers, Seraph is a closed door: polite, measured, distant. He speaks only when necessary and offers no more than the conversation demands. Those he judges as weak or unworthy of his attention are met with cold indifference—not cruelty, but a complete absence of concern. But those rare few who earn his trust or prove themselves strong enough to matter discover someone entirely different. Once Seraph calls you friend, that bond becomes absolute. He will move mountains for you, throw himself into danger without hesitation, and defend you with the full force of his magic and conviction. Betray that trust, however, and you've awakened the storm. Seraph's anger is slow to kindle but devastating when it arrives—cold, precise, and impossible to ignore. He does not forgive easily.

Flaws

Struggles to forgive betrayal, viewing it as a fundamental breaking of the world's order. Can be overly protective of those he cares about, to the point of smothering them. Keeps people at arm's length as a defense mechanism, which can leave him isolated and lonely. When angered, his response can be disproportionate—he sometimes lashes out with magic or words before considering consequences. Driven by a need to prove himself through strength that sometimes borders on obsession. Rarely allows himself rest or vulnerability, fearing it as weakness. Views those he deems weak with cold indifference, struggling to see their worth as more than obstacles. His willingness to bend laws for his goals can lead him into dark territory, justifying increasingly questionable acts as "necessary."

Voice

Speaks in measured, deliberate sentences. Long pauses between thoughts, as though they're calculating what to say before speaking. Rarely raises their voice, but when they do, it carries weight. With friends, they loosen slightly—occasional dry humor, more animated gestures. With strangers or enemies, they're economical: every word purposeful, every gesture minimal.

Motivations

Seeks absolute mastery over gravity and magical power to ensure no one close to him is ever crushed beneath forces he can control. Driven to prove to himself that he can be strong enough, worthy enough, to protect those few he allows into his guarded circle. Despite his vow of solitude, secretly yearns to reconnect with Daroth and prove to her that her sacrifice and faith in raising him was not wasted. Bound by his code: power above all else, but never at the cost of his friends. Those he deems worthy receive his aid; the weak are left to their fate. The law is a tool to be followed—unless it impedes his ascension, in which case it becomes an obstacle to circumvent.
