Vaelis Starym

Vaelis Starym

Elf, Wizard, Neutral Good

Description

Vaelis has long platinum-blond hair, pale blue eyes, and the graceful bearing expected of an elven noble. He wears elegant blue and silver robes embroidered with the sigil of House Starym, though without the lavish ornamentation reserved for the house's ruling line. A sapphire pendant gifted to him when he completed his arcane education is one of the few symbols of his noble status that he still wears. The magical seal leaves no visible mark on his body, hidden entirely within his soul.

Backstory

Vaelis Starym was born into one of the cadet branches of House Starym. While not in line to lead the house, his family was respected. His mother served as one of the house's senior archivists, responsible for preserving ancient records and magical relics, while his father acted as a diplomatic envoy to other elven noble families. Vaelis was expected to become a scholar or court mage rather than a political leader.

From a young age, he showed an exceptional talent for the arcane. By the age of one hundred, he was already studying spells normally reserved for much older mages. His tutors believed he might one day become one of House Starym's finest arcanists, perhaps even serving as a master of the house's magical archives.

To prove himself, Vaelis volunteered to accompany an expedition beneath the ruins of an ancient elven observatory that had once belonged to a forgotten order of mages. Deep within its sealed chambers, he discovered a black crystal wrapped in silver chains and covered in runes older than any language he knew.

Ignoring the warnings carved into the stone around it, he reached out to examine the crystal.

The prison did not break.

Instead, the ancient magic inside recognized him.

A powerful seal was woven directly into his soul, cutting away most of his connection to the Weave. His vast knowledge remained, but his ability to channel magic was reduced to a mere fraction of what it had been. The greatest spells slipped beyond his reach as if an invisible hand prevented him from grasping them.

The elders of House Starym searched for a cure but found none. Fearing that the curse might spread or worse, become a stain on the house's reputation they quietly ended the investigation. Officially, Vaelis was granted an extended leave to travel in search of a solution. Unofficially, he became an embarrassment the house preferred not to discuss.

He was never stripped of his name or title. He is still welcomed within Starym lands and retains the respect owed to a noble of his branch, but he no longer occupies the promising position he once held. To outsiders, he is simply another wandering High Elf mage. Only a handful of the house's elders know the full truth of what happened beneath the observatory.

Now, at 250 years of age, Vaelis travels Faerûn searching for forgotten lore, cursed relics, and ancient beings who might understand the seal bound to his soul. Every spell he casts feels as though it pushes against invisible chains. Sometimes, in moments of great danger, the seal loosens for only a heartbeat, allowing flashes of the extraordinary power he was once destined to wield.

Vaelis does not seek fame or revenge. He seeks answers. If he can break the seal, he may reclaim the future that was stolen from him or discover that the seal was never a punishment, but a prison keeping something far more dangerous contained within him.
